Overview
The candidate selected for this position will take on the responsibility of crafting optical and opto-mechanical components, modules, and subsystems integral to QuEra's neutral atom quantum computing technologies.

Role Expectations
As a senior engineer, the ideal applicant will significantly contribute to the advancement of optical hardware, leveraging a deep understanding of the company's foundational technologies and strategic goals.

This role necessitates collaboration within a multidisciplinary team comprising scientists, engineers, management, and support personnel across various expertise levels.

Qualifications
The preferred candidate should possess a solid grasp of optical design principles and demonstrate the capability to guide a design through its lifecycle, from conception to full-scale production.

While we welcome applications from individuals with degrees outside of Optical Engineering or closely related disciplines, we encourage these candidates to clearly articulate their knowledge and experience in optical system design in a cover letter.

Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with physicists and senior engineers to establish requirements and specifications for optical hardware.
- Design optical and opto-mechanical systems, including multi-element lens assemblies and custom mounts, utilizing both optical and mechanical design software.
- Document hardware designs, including specifications, performance metrics, and manufacturability analyses.

- Source components and construct prototypes to validate hardware functionality.
- Develop assembly and testing protocols for execution by fellow engineers and technicians.

Required Qualifications
- A minimum of a B.S. degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field (M.S./Ph.D. preferred).
- At least 5 years of industry experience in designing optical and opto-mechanical systems, ideally within a well-established engineering organization.
- A fundamental understanding of optical physics and design principles, encompassing geometric optics, physical optics, lens design, and opto-mechanical design.

- Proficiency with standard optical (Zemax) and mechanical design (Solidworks or Inventor) software tools, particularly in a structured engineering environment (PDM/PLM).
- Strong practical laboratory skills with a proven track record of building complex optical setups.
- Excellent communication abilities, capable of articulating physical reasoning, design choices, and experimental findings to a diverse audience, including technical and non-technical staff.
