Summary

The individual in this role will be responsible for designing optical and opto-mechanical components, modules and/or subsystems used in QuEra's neutral atom quantum computing platforms. As a senior-level engineer, the ideal candidate will play an important role in developing optical hardware derived from understanding the company's core technology and strategic initiatives. He or she will be expected to work in an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, management, and support staff of various levels. The ideal candidate should have a fundamental understanding of optical design principles and be capable of bringing a design through the design lifecycle from initiation to mature manufacturing.

Although technical professionals from various fields often have experience in optics, we are searching for a candidate with deeper domain-level expertise than is typically acquired by persons outside of the field of Optical Engineering. We may review applications from candidates with degrees other than Optical Engineering or closely related fields, but we encourage such applicants to explicitly describe their understanding and experience in optical system design in a cover letter of one to two pages.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with physicists and other senior-level engineers to derive requirements/specifications for optical hardware
  • Design optical and opto-mechanical hardware, such as multi-element lens assemblies, custom lens mounts, optical modules, etc., in both optical and mechanical (CAD) design software
  • Document hardware designs with specifications, performance metrics, sensitivity analyses, manufacturability, etc.
  • Procure parts and assemble prototypes to verify hardware performance
  • Write assembly and test instructions for execution by other engineers and/or technicians
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field (M.S./Ph.D. preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years industry experience in designing optical and opto-mechanical systems (preferably in an established engineering enterprise)
  • Fundamental understanding of optical physics and optical design principles, including but not limited to geometric optics, physical optics, lens design, opto-mechanical design
  • Experience with common optical (Zemax) and mechanical design (Solidworks or Inventor) software tools, particularly in an enterprise engineering environment (PDM/PLM)
  • Strong hands-on laboratory and prototyping skills with a history of constructing complex optical setups
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain physical reasoning, design decisions, and experimental results to technical, management, non-technical support staff of varying levels
