Special Information:

The Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Coordinator oversees the AIS watercraft inspection supervisory team and guarantees the execution of the AIS watercraft inspection and decontamination initiative. This role ensures that all operational considerations align with statewide fisheries management strategies. The coordinator is accountable for executing prevention measures outlined in the Montana Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan, ensuring that all facets of the prevention operation are as effective and efficient as possible. This position also plays a critical role in rapid response readiness in collaboration with the Prevention Coordinator, Bureau Chief, and fisheries divisions' action plans regarding any new aquatic invasive species infestations.

Key Responsibilities:

The Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Coordinator is tasked with ensuring that the ground operations of the AIS Prevention Program function as effectively and efficiently as possible. This role supervises a team of 5 AIS area supervisors who manage or oversee up to 200 seasonal personnel operating watercraft inspection stations statewide. The coordinator supports watercraft inspection operations by:

  • Coordinating and supervising watercraft inspection station supervisors, working closely with human resources to ensure all necessary documentation is completed in a timely and organized manner related to hiring, disciplinary actions, end-of-year terminations, performance appraisals, and payroll.
  • Ensuring all fleet, credit card, and travel vouchers are accurately completed and submitted on time.
  • Collaborating with station supervisors and partner-operated stations to address equipment needs, maintenance, and repairs. Managing the distribution of all necessary equipment for station operations, including paperwork, tablets, mobile devices, manuals, and more.
  • Possibly engaging in procurement, contracts, or leases.
  • Coordinating and assessing training initiatives for area supervisors and inspectors.
  • Evaluating station operations and logistics for potential improvements.
  • Creating opportunities for professional growth within the team.
  • Supporting data management and mobile application effectiveness.
  • Reviewing quality assurance and quality control implementation with the AIS coordinator and area supervisors.
  • Enhancing inspection station protocols and reporting processes.
  • Promoting AIS outreach initiatives.
  • Preparing for rapid response efforts.
  • Assisting the AIS coordinator with law enforcement at stations.
  • Working closely on vessels affected by mussels.

Physical and Environmental Demands:

This role involves outdoor work, sometimes in adverse weather conditions. The employee may face hazardous working conditions requiring extended hours in the field. Travel to meetings, including potential out-of-state travel, may necessitate significant time away from home.

Education and Experience:

The qualifications for this position are typically acquired through a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, Fish and Wildlife Management, Aquatic Ecology, or a closely related field, along with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, including aquatic invasive species management, fish and wildlife management, watercraft inspection management, and staff supervision. Proficiency in computer software, including Excel, MS Word, and Access, is required. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Experience managing a watercraft inspection program and strong supervisory and staff management skills are essential.
