AIS Prevention Specialist Job Description

The State of Montana is seeking a highly skilled AIS Prevention Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our fisheries management team, you will play a critical role in preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) in Montana's waterways.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of AIS watercraft inspection station supervisors and staff.
  • Ensure the effective implementation of the AIS watercraft inspection and decontamination program.
  • Develop and implement prevention actions identified in the Montana Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan.
  • Collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies, non-government organizations, and the general public to achieve AIS prevention goals.
  • Manage and maintain equipment, supplies, and resources necessary for station operations.
  • Coordinate training efforts for area supervisors and inspectors.
  • Evaluate station operations and logistics for improvement.
  • Support data management and WID mobile application for effectiveness.
  • Review QAQC implementation with AIS coordinator and area supervisors.
  • Support improvements in inspection station protocols and reporting.
  • Support AIS outreach and preparedness for rapid response efforts.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, Fish and Wildlife Management, Aquatic Ecology, or closely related field.
  • At least 2 years of job-related experience in Aquatic invasive species management, fish and wildlife management, watercraft inspection management, and staff supervision.
  • Computer software training required, including Excel, MS Word, and Access.
Working Conditions:

Working conditions involve outdoor work, at times in inclement weather. Employee may encounter hazardous working conditions requiring long hours in the field. Travel to meetings, including out-of-state travel, will require extended travel away from home.
