Chicago, Illinois, United States Engie Full time
Position Overview

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will leverage your technical skills to enhance the performance and dependability of a diverse portfolio of renewable energy projects, including wind and solar installations. Your role will involve providing engineering assistance related to mechanical systems, including drivetrain assemblies, wind turbine blades, hydraulic mechanisms, generators, towers, foundations, fasteners, and solar tracking systems. You will respond to site-specific requirements as they emerge, addressing a range of challenges with a focus on continuous improvement while collaborating with site teams and managing projects aimed at boosting operational efficiency.
  • Act as the primary engineering resource to enhance asset availability and resolve operational issues, ensuring key performance indicators for equipment reliability and uptime are met through the application of technical drawings, operational insights, and fundamental engineering principles.
  • Evaluate damage to critical components, classify severity levels, and provide repair or troubleshooting recommendations to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
  • Monitor and assess mechanical performance by analyzing and trending results from various inspections, monitoring systems, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) outputs.
  • Deliver prompt and effective follow-up actions based on identified issues, trends, and root cause analyses.
  • Serve as a technical liaison within and outside the organization, taking independent action on technical matters.
  • Function as a mechanical consultant for internal teams to validate OEM recommendations, third-party Independent Engineer (IE) assessments, and independent service provider evaluations.
  • Negotiate critical and complex issues with senior engineers and executives from other organizations.
  • Support multiple renewable energy sites across North America.
  • Make informed decisions and recommendations that significantly impact extensive engineering and related activities for the organization.
  • Identify and mitigate equipment faults and failures using established Root Cause Analysis methodologies, such as 8 Disciplines (8D) Problem Solving and Six Sigma.
  • Oversee subcontractors during maintenance operations as necessary.
  • Assess and implement mechanical enhancements and pilot initiatives.
  • Develop business cases, economic justifications, and budgets for engineering projects.
  • Manage the implementation process: create Request For Quotes (RFQs), assess bids and contracts, award Purchase Orders (POs), oversee contractors and field costs, and evaluate effectiveness.
  • Establish scope, schedule, and conduct End of Warranty inspections for major components, filing necessary claims with generation equipment OEMs.
  • Engage in and support site safety and environmental management systems, ensuring safety and environmental considerations are integrated into all activities.
  • Maintain mechanical engineering and repair documentation to ensure accuracy and consistency across the North American fleet.
  • Develop and deliver training, standard operating procedures, and technical documentation as required for safe and efficient operations.
  • Present technical findings and information to site personnel, management, directors, and vice presidents of operations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in the field.
  • Experience in the Renewable Energy sector.
  • Proficient in conducting root cause analyses.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and best practices, including those from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), DNV/GL, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
  • Knowledge of mechanical operations and maintenance across various manufacturers (e.g., GE, Nordex, Acciona, Siemens, Vestas, Goldwind).
  • Experience in developing engineering tools using programming languages such as Matlab, Python, or SQL.
  • Exhibit a high level of creativity, foresight, and sound judgment in planning, organizing, and directing extensive engineering programs.
  • Manage complex programs that are critical to the organization's objectives.
  • Possess strong planning, scheduling, and project management skills, with the ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrate advanced computer and analytical skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications like Excel, SharePoint, and PowerBI.
Additional Information
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 20% of the time, including some overnight trips.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record.
  • Compliance with health and safety policies is mandatory.
  • This role involves both indoor (80%) and outdoor (20%) work, with outdoor tasks subject to weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights exceeding 250 feet, as well as enter confined spaces as necessary.
  • Must be able to hear and understand audible alarms and detect changes in noise levels of rotating equipment.
  • Some lifting may be required.
