Job Overview

The Planning Architect II will report directly to the Director of Capital Design within the Office of University Planning (OUP). The primary responsibilities include:
- Supporting the Director in ensuring that Capital Projects align with the institution's mission, vision, strategic objectives, and the overarching campus master plan.
- Contributing to the university's capital outlay planning initiatives and the formulation of capital projects related to the Six-Year Capital Outlay Plan.
- Engaging in thorough and timely design evaluations of university capital projects from the conceptual stage through to implementation.
- Participating in all phases of capital project processes to ensure that planning, aesthetics, programmatic needs, and spatial utilizations are suitable and consistent with the project's authorized objectives and Campus Design Principles.
- Assisting in design review procedures, value management initiatives, and construction assessments for capital projects to ensure timely and budget-compliant completion.
- Offering expertise in sustainable design practices at both the systems and building levels, while guiding capital project processes to advocate for sustainable design principles and best practices.
- Aiding in the establishment and maintenance of design and planning standards for the institution.

Required Qualifications

- Advanced degree in Architecture, or a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture coupled with relevant work experience equivalent to an advanced degree.
- Proven experience in applying sustainable benchmarking within professional architectural practice.
- Registration or a demonstrated capacity to obtain registration as a Professional Architect in Virginia within a year of employment.
- A minimum of five years of professional architectural experience.
- LEED Green Associate certification or an equivalent qualification.
- Proven project management experience.
- Valid driver's license is required.
- Proficiency in current office software, including word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Competence in design software such as Revit, AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

- Ten or more years of experience in the architectural field.
- Significant experience (3-5 years of the above 10) with a focus on the design of environmentally sustainable projects.
- LEED AP Certification or an equivalent qualification.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the technical analysis of thermal performance, daylighting, embodied carbon, etc.
- Experience in a university environment.
- Familiarity with Commonwealth of Virginia directives and requirements for higher education facilities.
- Experience in the design of higher education and campus planning/design.
- Experience in developing and maintaining design and planning standards.

Salary Information

Starting salary at $85,000; commensurate with experience.

Additional Information

The role primarily involves indoor work, but may occasionally require outdoor activities in various weather conditions.
Repetitive tasks involving computer use are expected.
The ability to travel to and from work sites and conduct onsite inspections is necessary, which may involve bending, climbing, pushing/pulling, reaching, lifting, standing, walking, and safely handling up to 50 lbs.
Candidates must be able to navigate small spaces and perform tasks on uneven surfaces.
A clean and safe driving record is essential.
A driver's license check will be conducted.
Travel to various sites may be required for training, public outreach, and education purposes.
Flexibility to work after hours or on weekends may be necessary.

A criminal conviction check will be required for the successful candidate.
