Summary

Starting pay range: $ per hour

Under the general oversight of the Chief of Police, this position is responsible for overseeing law enforcement operations involving sworn or civilian personnel and executing a comprehensive range of police responsibilities as required.

The Fort Lupton Police Department is offering up to a $10,000 hiring bonus for qualified candidates*

The hiring bonus is distributed in two parts. The first installment is provided upon successful completion of initial training (including field training), while the second is granted after the initial performance evaluation period.
Applicants must maintain good standing with their current or previous law enforcement agency. Disciplinary actions or termination from the most recent law enforcement employer may disqualify candidates for the bonus.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee rotating shifts, guiding police officers and other assigned personnel in their duties.

• Manage the scheduling and coordination of shift changes.

• Review various police-related reports prepared by subordinate officers for accuracy and completeness.

• Supervise and assess officers' arrests based on circumstances and evidence.

• Assign daily tasks based on departmental needs.

• Develop tactical plans for operations and investigations, innovating approaches to address community crime and issues.

• Inform the Patrol Lieutenant and Chief of Police regarding significant crimes or high-profile incidents.

• Maintain communication with police personnel to coordinate efforts during major investigations and provide assistance as needed.

• Engage with the public, court officials, and other city representatives in police activities as assigned.

• Supervise and guide assigned staff, making recommendations for hiring, discipline, and promotions.

• Ensure effective use of manpower and resources to combat crime and enhance safety within the city.

• Oversee the activities of multiple officers across various shifts and assignments.

• Review, approve, and submit reports and documentation from officers.

• Monitor and initially approve time reporting and leave requests for assigned officers.

• Provide guidance on departmental, city, state, and federal policies, procedures, and regulations.

• Conduct regular briefings to keep personnel informed on current issues.

• Maintain records of material, equipment, and vehicle usage and maintenance.

• Perform field duties as a commissioned officer, responding to service calls, intervening in disputes, investigating cases, writing reports, issuing citations, and making arrests as necessary.

• Testify in court as required.

• May be tasked with writing grants to secure funding for various departmental programs and equipment needs.

• Represent the department at community events and meetings, attending professional organization meetings as directed by the Chief of Police.

• Order departmental equipment and supplies as needed.

• Adhere to safety protocols, anticipating unsafe situations and acting to prevent accidents.

• Responsible for the safety of self and others, ensuring the use of required safety equipment.

• Assist the Chief of Police in implementing departmental policies and procedures.

• Embrace and promote the principles of community-oriented policing as outlined in the department's vision and core values.

• Coordinate crime prevention initiatives and community policing efforts.

• Perform related duties as assigned by the Chief of Police to meet the city's needs.

• May be required to work overtime.

• May supervise special programs or teams as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:

Skill, Knowledge, and Ability:

• Proficient understanding of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment, as well as applicable laws and ordinances.

• Ability to identify and analyze various police concerns and provide recommendations.

• Knowledge of pursuit driving policies and arrest control procedures.

• Ability to qualify quarterly for firearms proficiency.

• Proficient in computer usage with the ability to write correspondence adhering to prescribed styles and formats.

• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, various agencies, and the public.

• Proficient in computer skills and the ability to learn and utilize software applications for work processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other current technologies.

• Mathematical skills relevant to essential job functions.

• Ability to respond effectively to common inquiries or complaints from citizens and regulatory agencies.

• Knowledge of personnel practices to supervise, mentor, and train employees.

• Knowledge of law enforcement safety policies and procedures, fostering a strong safety culture within the department.

• Ability to maintain moral integrity and physical fitness standards as required by the department.

Education, Certifications, and Experience:
  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience as a police officer (excluding training time).
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience with the Fort Lupton Police Department for internal candidates.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience in leadership and/or training for external candidates.
  • College degree in criminal justice or a related field preferred.
  • Colorado POST (Peace Officer Standards and Testing) certification.
  • Colorado Driver's License.
  • CCIC/CBI (Colorado Bureau of Investigations) certification.
  • Notary Public of the State of Colorado.
Working Environment, Physical Activities:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to balance, sit, stand, reach, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, demonstrate manual dexterity, grasp, talk, hear, and see.

• The employee may need to remain alert during prolonged periods of stationary or repetitive activity and maintain composure during stressful situations.

• Information handled may be graphic and distressing.

• Exposure to outdoor elements, including walking, running, and driving in inclement weather.

• Exposure to extreme temperatures, irritant gases, vibrations, heights, confined spaces, and emergency driving.

• Unconventional work hours, including call-outs, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Other Qualifications:

• Must reside within sixty minutes commuting time from the Police Station.
- External candidates must successfully complete patrol officer field training and the Sergeant mentorship program prior to appointment as a patrol Sergeant.
