Overview

The City of New Haven is on the lookout for a proactive and enthusiastic individual to fill the role of Assistant to the Chief of Staff within the Mayor's Office. This pivotal position is essential for promoting the policy objectives of various City departments and agencies, while also providing support to the Chief of Staff and the Mayor, ultimately serving the community of New Haven.

The Assistant to the Chief of Staff is integral in delivering project oversight, programmatic assistance, and expert guidance on a range of intricate matters. Reporting directly to the Chief of Staff, this role demands outstanding organizational abilities, a commitment to the mission, and the capacity to juggle multiple responsibilities and priorities efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

The Assistant to the Chief of Staff is tasked with advancing the policy goals of City departments and agencies, as well as the residents of New Haven. The primary responsibilities include:
  • Providing expert professional assistance and support to the Chief of Staff and the Mayor on a variety of complex issues.
  • Collaborating with the Chief of Staff to enhance the effectiveness, equity, and efficiency of City services.
  • Managing and prioritizing multiple projects concurrently while ensuring timely follow-up on critical events.
  • Participating in various governmental and community meetings, developing and presenting reports on relevant matters.
  • Acting as the Mayor's representative to diverse groups and institutions, including arts and cultural organizations.
  • Working alongside the Chief of Staff and stakeholders to formulate strategic plans and policies that align with the Mayor's vision for the city.
  • Handling special assignments as directed by the Chief of Staff and the Mayor.
  • Facilitating communication and coordination among different city departments to ensure smooth execution of initiatives.
  • Conducting policy analysis and research on emerging city issues, providing recommendations for improvements.
  • Performing related duties as required.
Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Political Science, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred. A minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in municipal government or public administration is required, with leadership experience being advantageous. PMI Certifications are a plus.

Skills and Abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of municipal government structure, ordinances, and policies related to the Mayor's office.
  • Familiarity with legislative processes and procedures.
  • Understanding of relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Strong grasp of public administration principles, including budgeting and reporting.
  • Proven project management skills, with a track record of delivering results on time and within budget.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to work under pressure while managing multiple projects.
  • Proficiency in research and analysis techniques.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to present information clearly and persuasively.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and understand cultural nuances.
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
Work Environment

Flexibility in working hours is necessary, as occasional evenings and weekends may be required to support meetings and events.

Compensation and Employment Terms

This position is appointed by the Mayor and is part of the Executive Management & Confidential Employee Policy. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check and a physical examination, including drug screening.
