Overview:

The Association of Academic Museums & Galleries is seeking a dynamic leader for the role of Chief of Public Engagement Programs. This position is pivotal in shaping a comprehensive vision and strategy for public engagement initiatives that deepen the understanding and appreciation of our diverse collections and exhibitions.


Key Responsibilities:

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Chief of Public Engagement Programs will:

  • Develop and refine a diverse array of exhibition and educational programming.
  • Establish a distinctive identity for public engagement efforts through collaboration with institutional colleagues and community partners.
  • Enhance the organization's role as a significant cultural and intellectual hub for various audiences.
  • Lead strategic initiatives to promote public engagement programs effectively.
  • Participate actively in the broader community of museum public programming and serve as a thought leader in the field.

Supervisory Duties:

This role includes oversight of all educational and exhibition staff, as well as interns and volunteers. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is essential.


Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Master's Degree and a minimum of five years of experience in museum programming or a related field.
  • A creative, energetic, and entrepreneurial spirit with exceptional consensus-building abilities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the capacity to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Proficiency in fostering trust and collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including staff and community members.
  • Ability to translate institutional vision into engaging exhibitions and programs across various subjects.
  • A deep interest in and familiarity with museums, particularly in object-based research and education.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and analytical skills, with the ability to formulate budgets and communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrated success in public speaking and representing the organization in various forums.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to thrive under pressure while maintaining professionalism and a customer-focused approach.
  • Experience in financial tracking and grant writing is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Candidates must be able to routinely lift up to 40 lbs.


Preferred Experience:

Significant experience in programming within a museum or academic setting, with a focus on natural history is highly desirable.
