Role Summary:

Under the supervision of departmental leadership and in accordance with established protocols, the Advanced Respiratory Care Specialist exhibits a high level of expertise in respiratory therapy and designated patient care areas. This role involves delivering proficient care to patients through airway management, mechanical ventilation oversight, oxygen delivery, aerosol treatments, and respiratory interventions aimed at assessing, preventing, stabilizing, or addressing respiratory issues.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Provides standard respiratory care services, including but not limited to aerosol medication administration, basic pulmonary function assessments, breathing rehabilitation, oxygen therapy, and arterial blood gas sampling. Ensures comprehensive airway management, including the aspiration of established airways, tracheostomy maintenance, and endotracheal intubation and extubation. May conduct pulmonary function tests as required.
2. Carolina Air Care - When engaged with Carolina Air Care, may transport pediatric and neonatal patients from referral facilities following established protocols. May perform advanced respiratory care procedures as per guidelines, including UAC, UVC, IV insertion, intraosseous access, chest tube placement, needle decompression, and blood glucose monitoring, as directed by the medical control officer.
3. ECMO - When involved with ECMO, may oversee extracorporeal circulation for cardiac and respiratory support of patients.
4. Availability for on-call duties during various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays may be required.
5. Responsible for all aspects of ventilator management, including setup, functionality verification, and patient monitoring, employing specialized modes to address the patient's condition. Implements appropriate weaning strategies as necessary.
6. Continuously enhances professional knowledge and skills. Operates independently with minimal oversight and serves as a resource for colleagues based on experience.

Additional Information:
Educational Qualifications:
* Completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
Licensure/Certification:
* Current certification as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) is required. Note: Current team members with active Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) certification by the NBRC and a minimum of 15 years of CRT experience, who are ineligible for the RRT board exam but demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of respiratory care, also qualify for this position.
Depending on the patient population served, all team members must possess at least one of the following certifications based on their practice area: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for adult care, Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) for NICU, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) for PICU/Rex, Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT), or an advanced practice certificate for administering moderate sedation in the Bronchoscopy Lab. All certifications must be maintained as required by the certifying body.
Professional Experience:
* Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Proficient in reading, analyzing, and interpreting clinical data and technical procedures. Capable of documenting clinical information accurately. Effective communication skills to convey information and respond to inquiries from patients, physicians, family members, and other staff. Mathematical proficiency to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical scenarios. Strong reasoning skills to identify problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a wide range of technical situations.
