About the Department:
The Chief Business Officer team within the CEC Office of the Dean is responsible for facilitating the strategic planning and execution of the unit's financial and operational vision. This encompasses a comprehensive range of business functions, including finance, research administration, human resources, operations, and information technology. The CBO is tasked with providing leadership, supervision, and coordination of these functions, while also overseeing the development and implementation of policies and procedures to achieve desired outcomes. The team maintains collaborative relationships with central administration and other university departments to ensure effective outcomes.
The Research Administration team, part of the CBO team, is dedicated to supporting faculty with proposal submissions and the financial management of their research grants and contracts, all while emphasizing a customer-service approach. Recently, the college has expanded its pre-award responsibilities to enhance the research administration infrastructure across the campus. This initiative offers applicants the chance to contribute to the development and refinement of the pre-award process at the college level.
The College of Engineering and Computing has seen significant growth in its research portfolio, with expenditures exceeding $65M in recent years and current projects valued at over $120 million. The college anticipates nearly 400 proposal submissions annually, presenting a remarkable opportunity for applicants to engage in research administration within a dynamic environment.
About the Position:
The Manager of Pre-Award Research Administration is responsible for leading and supervising all personnel engaged in pre-award activities for the sponsored research portfolio of the College of Engineering and Computing. This role demands a commitment to delivering high-quality customer service to faculty members involved in sponsored research, ensuring compliance with quality standards and all relevant policies and regulations. The Manager will also participate in pre-award activities and provide oversight for the Pre-Award team.
Key Responsibilities:
Management and Oversight of Pre-Award Staff:
Directs the daily operations of a team of Pre-Award Administrators; Assesses workload distribution and reallocates tasks as necessary; Offers guidance and support to team members; Assists in establishing and implementing training programs for the CEC Pre-Award team; Ensures quality in all staff activities; Promotes exceptional customer service to faculty, departments, and centers served; Conducts performance evaluations and addresses performance issues promptly.Management and Oversight of Pre-Award Processes:
Monitors and facilitates the proposal process in compliance with university procedures; Conducts departmental reviews of CEC proposals and collaborates with Pre-Award Administrators to resolve issues prior to submission; Develops and maintains pre-award policies and procedures ensuring alignment with university standards; Acts as a backup for Pre-Award Administrators as needed to meet proposal deadlines; Provides assistance with complex proposals and issues; Generates reports on pre-award performance as required.Liaison with University and External Research Administration Teams:
Collaborates with the Office of Sponsored Programs to ensure compliance with university policies; Partners with the Office of Research Integrity and Assurance; Coordinates inter-team meetings with the Post-Award team to foster collaboration; Engages with Principal Investigators and support staff at collaborating institutions to secure necessary documentation; Participates in university committees as needed.Additional Duties:
Performs other necessary functions to support the CEC Sponsored Research portfolio, including assisting the Director of Research Administration and Chief Business Officer.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience; Experience in Sponsored Programs Administration; Proven experience in the creation and submission of research proposals; Supervisory experience; Knowledge of federal regulations regarding research grants and contracts; Strong interpersonal skills; Proficiency in MS Office Suite; Effective customer service skills; Ability to analyze data and sponsor guidelines; Proactive problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in a related field; Relevant certifications such as CRA or CPRA; Extensive experience in Sponsored Programs Administration; Previous management experience in research administration; Familiarity with university policies and procedures related to grants and contracts.Instructions to Applicants:
