Position Summary:

The Opto-Mechanical Assembly Technician is responsible for assembling products that integrate optical, mechanical, and electronic components. This role involves the assembly, testing, and qualification of electro-optical instruments, components, and systems. The technician will also document processes and provide immediate feedback to the engineering team. This position is part of our Tightbeam initiative, a state-of-the-art laser communication system designed to connect diverse targets across extensive distances with exceptional reliability and unprecedented data rates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to detailed work instructions, engineering schematics, and drawings with minimal supervision.
  • Conduct inspection, assembly, and integration of high-end, intricate optical-mechanical and optical components, including fiber optics and lasers.
  • Diagnose issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Assemble optical, mechanical, and electro-optical systems within a cleanroom environment.
  • Utilize optical measurement instruments such as power meters, fiber inspection tools, and microscopes.
  • Identify design flaws and suggest improvements to the design team to facilitate assembly and integration.
  • Organize and route wires and optical fibers neatly.
  • Document build notes, including serial numbers and performance specifications.
  • Test the functional performance of assemblies.
  • Perform precision optical alignment and calibration of systems.
  • Maintain quality system documentation.
  • Inspect incoming parts, components, and optics.
  • Identify and document defective components.
  • Conduct in-process inspections and testing.
  • Package instruments for shipment and complete necessary shipping documentation.
  • Escalate issues and propose solutions as needed.
  • Provide training for other production personnel and achieve a high level of cross-training.

Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in optical science with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with optical handling, cleaning, and assembly protocols.
  • Understanding of optical devices such as lenses, mirrors, prisms, collimators, shear plates, and beam splitters.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
  • Experience with optical lab equipment including interferometers, oscilloscopes, function generators, precision power supplies, and digital multimeters.
