Our mission focuses on creating reusable, secure, and cost-effective space vehicles and systems, all within a framework that prioritizes safety, teamwork, and inclusivity. Join our diverse group of innovators as we write new chapters in the story of space exploration.

This position is integral to the New Shepard initiative. New Shepard is a reusable suborbital rocket system crafted to transport astronauts and research payloads beyond the Karman line, the globally recognized threshold of space. By emphasizing operational reusability, New Shepard aligns with our goal of making space more accessible.

Upon successfully completing a rigorous hands-on training program and achieving certification, you will take charge of operating the Crew Capsule vehicle at our launch site in Texas, facilitating pre-launch, launch, and post-launch operations. As a flight controller, your contributions will be crucial in ensuring a safe and successful launch. Additionally, you will engage in various aspects of enhancing launch operations, including authoring and verifying procedures, process optimization, and conducting safety analyses.

This role is based in either Kent, WA or Van Horn, TX, with regular travel (25%) to the alternate location.

We seek an individual who can leverage their technical knowledge, leadership abilities, and commitment to excellence to enhance the safety of human spaceflight. A passion for our mission and vision is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Achieve proficiency in managing advanced mechanical, fluid, and avionics systems while working towards certification as a Capsule Controller for the New Shepard rocket's testing and launch.
  • Act as a flight controller on launch day, preparing the capsule for astronaut boarding.
  • Address off-nominal scenarios, taking necessary actions to ensure crew and astronaut safety while guiding the team to resolve any anomalies.
  • Operate Crew Capsule systems to support vehicle testing and pre-launch preparations, including vehicle checkouts and mission simulations.
  • Develop and maintain procedure updates applicable across all operational phases.
  • Assist in enhancing the control console human interface.
  • Contribute to safety initiatives by improving processes and documentation.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in engineering or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience as an operator or flight controller, including console or control room experience, and familiarity with wireless communication protocols.
  • A minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience with complex vehicle preparations or testing.
  • Strong analytical skills and a desire to understand intricate systems, tackle challenging issues, and thrive in a dynamic environment.
  • Proven commitment to safety and adherence to established protocols.
  • Ability to perform effectively in time-sensitive situations.
  • High digital literacy and capacity to learn new software tools.
  • Willingness to reside at or travel to the West Texas launch site.
  • Ability to build trust, maintain positive professional relationships, and foster an inclusive culture.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or legally admitted refugee or asylee.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with pneumatic and electronic/control systems.
  • Proficiency in coding basic software programs or algorithms.
  • Familiarity with aerospace vehicle pressure systems and manufacturing technologies.
  • Experience in leadership roles as an Operator, Test Conductor, or Test Engineer.
  • Experience in developing, writing, and updating operational or testing procedures.

Compensation: The compensation range for on-site WA applicants is $89,820 to $125,748.

Benefits: We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, a 401(k) plan with company matching, and an Education Support Program. Paid Time Off includes up to four weeks per year and up to 14 company-paid holidays. Discretionary bonuses are available to reward individual contributions and share in company success.
