Job Summary
The Commonwealth of Virginia seeks a highly skilled and detail-oriented Assistant Attorney General to join our team in the Office of Publications. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for preparing official and informal opinions for issuance and overseeing the publication of the Annual Report of the Attorney General.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare official and informal opinions for issuance and oversee the publication of the Annual Report of the Attorney General.
- Review opinion drafts for substantive accuracy and edit them as necessary for style, clarity, and proper citation according to conventions of the Bluebook.
- Conduct legal research as necessary and draft some opinions as assigned.
- Transmit approved opinions to clients and arrange for the publication of official opinions on the internet.
- Assist in developing and improving public access to official opinions of the Attorney General issued throughout the history of the Office.
- Oversee the publication of the Annual Report of the Attorney General by collecting and editing yearly submissions provided by other Divisions of the Office and by compiling all official opinions issued during a given year for inclusion in the book.
- Create all other data elements needed for the book, including a comprehensive subject index, and work with publishers to ensure timely publication of the book by May 1 of each year as mandated by § 2.2-516 of the Code of Virginia.
- Additional duties include preparing weekly opinion status reports and maintaining opinions files according to file retention schedules, as well as legislative bill reviews as assigned.
