PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Diagnose maintenance issues related to transit revenue vehicles and propose effective solutions to avert significant breakdowns, reduce costly repairs, and ensure passenger safety and comfort.
  • Develop Service Bulletins, Modification Bulletins, and Technical Services Memos to keep terminal staff informed about changes in component design and updated repair and maintenance procedures recommended by manufacturers.
  • Assess vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance methods to guarantee compliance with the latest manufacturer standards.
  • Engage with vendors to address issues concerning defective equipment, parts, and support products.
  • Prepare, review, and modify engineering schematics. Design custom tools and fixtures for the maintenance and repair of revenue vehicles, oversee their construction or fabrication, and create service instructions for their use.
  • Collaborate with manufacturer representatives to facilitate the installation, testing, and evaluation of new and non-OEM products, aiming for alternative sourcing and cost efficiency.
  • Assist the Purchasing Department in sourcing replacement parts that are essential for the operation and maintenance of revenue vehicles and other equipment, initiating requests for CTA lot numbers.
  • Review and update Material Specifications based on engineering standards, testing results, and actual material inspections, recommending necessary changes for approval to the Manager of Technical Services.
  • Inspect manufacturing facilities of suppliers to ensure they meet specified standards for production and capacity.
  • May supervise junior engineers, draftsmen, and technicians on complex projects. Perform additional duties as required.
  • Carry out related responsibilities as assigned.

CHALLENGES

  • Implementing cost reduction strategies.
  • Providing engineering support for vehicles and equipment that are no longer supported by the OEM.
  • Identifying, assessing, and integrating new technologies.
  • Managing the modification process of rail cars from initial testing to completion.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with approximately 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Must hold a valid Driver's License.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work physically on, under, or inside equipment while conducting inspections and tests.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Proficient in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and technical engineering software.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD is essential.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain current Rail Safety Training certification.
  • For electrically focused roles, extensive experience in the design, repair, and operation of electric-powered rail transit vehicles is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Typical office and testing laboratory environments.
  • Exposure to 600-volt third rails and energized equipment.
  • Work in rail vehicle maintenance shops and terminals with hazards such as vehicular noise, dust, grease, and moving machinery.
  • On-call availability 24/7 for incident investigations and service interruptions.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions and right-of-way environments.

  • Personal computer and related software, MMIS, Oracle, CAD systems, electrical meters, and measuring instruments.
