PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Diagnose maintenance issues in transit revenue vehicles and propose solutions to avert significant failures, reduce costly repairs, and ensure passenger safety and comfort.
- Develop Service Bulletins, Modification Bulletins, and Technical Services Memos to keep terminal staff informed about design alterations and updated repair protocols from manufacturers.
- Assess vehicle and equipment maintenance practices to guarantee compliance with the latest manufacturer standards.
- Engage with vendors to address concerns regarding defective equipment, components, and support products.
- Create, review, and modify engineering schematics. Design specialized tools and fixtures that are not commercially available for vehicle maintenance and repair. Oversee the fabrication of these tools and provide service instructions for their use.
- Collaborate with manufacturer representatives to facilitate the installation, testing, and assessment of new and non-OEM products for potential cost savings and alternative sourcing.
- Assist the Purchasing Department in locating alternative suppliers for essential replacement parts that have been discontinued. Initiate requests for CTA lot number assignments.
- Revise Material Specifications based on engineering standards, testing results, and actual material inspections. Recommend necessary amendments for approval by the Manager of Technical Services.
- Inspect manufacturing facilities of suppliers to determine their capability to meet specified standards and production capacity.
- May supervise junior engineers, draftsmen, and technicians on complex projects. Perform additional duties as required.
- Carry out related responsibilities as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not include direct reports.
CHALLENGES
- Implementing cost reduction strategies.
- Providing engineering support for vehicles and equipment that are no longer supported by the original manufacturer.
- Identifying, evaluating, and integrating new technologies.
- Managing the modification process of rail cars from initial testing to completion.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with approximately 5+ years of relevant experience.
- Must hold a valid Driver's License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work physically on, under, or inside equipment during inspections and testing.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet, and technical engineering software.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD is essential.
- Must possess or be able to obtain current Rail Safety Training certification.
- For electrically focused roles, extensive experience in the design, repair, and operation of electric-powered rail transit vehicles is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Typical office environment and testing laboratory.
- Exposure to 600-volt third rails and energized equipment.
- Experience in rail vehicle maintenance shops and terminals, including noise, dust, grease, and moving vehicles.
- On-call availability for incident investigations and service interruptions.
- Exposure to various weather conditions and right-of-way environments.
EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS UTILIZED
- Personal computer and associated software, MMIS, Oracle, CAD systems, electrical meters, and measuring instruments.
