PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Diagnose maintenance issues in transit revenue vehicles and propose solutions to avert significant failures, reduce costly repairs, and enhance passenger safety and comfort.
  • Develop Service Bulletins, Modification Bulletins, and Technical Services Memos to update terminal staff on design modifications and revised repair and maintenance protocols as recommended by manufacturers.
  • Assess vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance methodologies to ensure compliance with the latest standards set by manufacturers.
  • Engage with vendors to address concerns related to defective equipment, components, and support products.
  • Create, review, and modify engineering schematics. Design specialized tools and fixtures that are not commercially available for the maintenance and repair of revenue vehicles. Oversee the fabrication of these tools or fixtures and develop service instructions for their application.
  • Collaborate with manufacturer representatives to facilitate the installation, testing, and assessment of new and non-original equipment manufacturer (OEM) products for potential cost savings and alternative sourcing.
  • Assist the Purchasing Department in identifying alternative suppliers for essential replacement parts that have been discontinued. Initiate requests for assigning lot numbers.
  • Revise Material Specifications based on engineering criteria, testing results, and actual material inspections. Recommend necessary changes for approval by the Manager of Technical Services.
  • Conduct inspections of suppliers' manufacturing facilities to ensure they meet specified production standards and have the capacity to deliver required products.
  • May supervise junior engineers, draftsmen, and technicians on complex projects. Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Execute related responsibilities as required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

There are no direct reports for this position.

CHALLENGES

  • Implementing cost-saving measures.
  • Providing engineering support for vehicles and equipment that are no longer backed by the OEM.
  • Identifying, evaluating, and integrating new technologies.
  • Managing the modification process of rail cars from initial testing to completion.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with approximately 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • A valid Driver's License is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work physically on, under, or inside equipment while conducting inspections and tests.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet applications, and technical engineering software.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD is essential.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain current Rail Safety Training certification.
  • When focused on electrical systems, extensive experience in the design, repair, and operation of electric-powered rail transit vehicles is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Typical office environment and testing laboratory.
  • Exposure to 600-volt third rails and energized equipment.
  • Work in a rail vehicle maintenance shop with potential hazards such as vehicular noise, dust, grease, and moving machinery.
  • On-call availability to assist with incident investigations and service interruptions.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions and right-of-way environments.

  • Personal computer and associated software, MMIS, Oracle, CAD systems, electrical meters, and measuring instruments.
