Washington, Washington, D.C., United States Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press Full time
Position Overview

Organization Overview

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (Reporters Committee) has been a pivotal entity since its inception in 1970, dedicated to offering pro bono legal assistance, amicus curiae support, and a wealth of legal resources aimed at safeguarding First Amendment rights and the newsgathering privileges of journalists. The organization serves a diverse array of clients, including news outlets, reporters, documentary filmmakers, and media attorneys, providing essential online resources.

Role Summary

Legal Counsel

The Reporters Committee is seeking a motivated early-career attorney to enhance its capacity to swiftly address legal challenges to press freedom, ensuring that journalists nationwide have seamless access to the pro bono legal support necessary for their safety and effectiveness. The Legal Counsel will manage the Reporters Committee's Legal Hotline, overseeing the contributions of legal fellows who respond to inquiries. Additionally, this role involves delivering legal training to journalists and media organizations, as well as developing and updating written resources on various topics, including safe reporting practices during protests and elections, and strategies for minimizing legal risks in story vetting.

The Legal Counsel will also engage in direct legal representation alongside fellow attorneys, advocating for the Reporters Committee, news organizations, and individual journalists in significant litigation concerning newsgathering and First Amendment rights. Furthermore, the role includes advising independent and freelance journalists on legal matters related to the Committee's pre-publication and vetting processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and manage the Legal Hotline, supervising legal fellows in their response to inquiries.
  • Conduct legal training sessions to educate journalists and media organizations about their rights regarding newsgathering and First Amendment protections.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive guides and written resources on topics such as safe reporting during protests and elections, and effective story vetting to mitigate legal risks.
  • Collaborate with other attorneys and staff to foster relationships with private legal practitioners, law firms, legal clinics at law schools, nonprofit organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Promote the initiatives of the Reporters Committee and partner legal service providers.
  • Work alongside other attorneys to represent journalists and media organizations in litigation and other matters related to First Amendment rights and newsgathering.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of one year of post-graduate legal experience, with a strong preference for candidates with a background in media law.
  • A deep commitment to the protection of press freedoms and a strong desire to support journalists across the nation.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; experience in public speaking is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, with a capacity to effectively supervise and mentor legal fellows and interns.
  • Sound judgment and the highest standards of professional integrity.
Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience. The Reporters Committee offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Three weeks of paid vacation, four floating holidays, sick leave, and all federal holidays.
  • A retirement savings plan with a 5% employer contribution to a 401k after three months of service.
  • Comprehensive employer-paid insurance coverage, including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance.
  • Options to utilize pre-tax dollars for dependent care and commuting expenses.
Application Process

Interested candidates should submit a resume and a cover letter detailing their interest in the position, along with contact information for three references. All application materials should be compiled into a single PDF or Word document. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Commitment to Diversity

The Reporters Committee is dedicated to fostering an inclusive work environment free from discrimination and harassment. All employment decisions are made based on business needs, job requirements, and individual qualifications, without regard to race, ethnicity, age, religion, family status, or any other protected status.
