Overview

This role is situated within the Office of the Chief Counsel at the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, part of the Department of the Treasury. The Bureau is dedicated to ensuring the financial integrity and operational effectiveness of the federal government through superior accounting, financing, collections, payments, and shared services.

Key Responsibilities

The focus of this position will be on federal fiscal, appropriations, budgetary, and accounting law, relevant to both the Bureau and the broader government context in relation to the Bureau's accounting and reporting mission. As a senior attorney, you will be recognized as a thought leader within the office and the Bureau, possessing a comprehensive understanding of Bureau authorities and operations, along with pertinent industry standards and trends. Regular interactions with Bureau executives and policy officials will be expected, where you will propose innovative and credible solutions to legal challenges, incorporating advisory business-line guidance as appropriate to enhance the Bureau's mission and effectiveness.

As a Senior Attorney-Advisor (General), your responsibilities will include:

  • Utilizing expert legal knowledge to tackle complex legal assignments, often independently, with minimal oversight.
  • Collaborating with senior attorneys, potentially leading specific practice areas and serving as the primary contact for clients in federal fiscal, appropriations, budgetary, and accounting law.
  • Mentoring junior attorneys and interns within the office.
  • Conducting legal research and providing opinions through oral or written advice, briefings, presentations, and legal memoranda.
  • Evaluating and applying relevant statutes, regulations, and Bureau policies across various operations and programs.
  • Assisting in litigation efforts involving the Bureau, providing technical support to the U.S. Department of Justice, and preparing necessary legal documents.
Qualifications Conditions of Employment
  • A one-year trial period may be required.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation is mandatory.
  • Compliance with federal employment verification processes is required.
  • Enrollment in Continuous Vetting upon onboarding.

Essential Requirements:

  1. Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
  2. At least six years of experience as a practicing attorney, with a minimum of two years at the GS-14 level or equivalent.
