Behavioral Support Specialist for Autism Services

Position Overview:


Under the guidance of the Program Supervisor and/or Qualified Supervising Provider, the Behavioral Support Specialist delivers essential behavioral interventions to individuals within the autism program. This role is integral to the treatment team, executing services as outlined in the individualized treatment plan. The position may require flexibility in scheduling, including weekends, holidays, and various shifts.

Key Responsibilities:
Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1. Deliver in-home and community-based behavioral interventions to individuals with autism as specified in the treatment plan.


2. Actively participate as a member of the treatment team by attending meetings, contributing insights regarding patient progress, and sharing observations on patient status.

3. Maintain accurate documentation of observations and care provided in the medical records.

4. Monitor patients and communicate any adverse reactions to medications or treatments to the Program Supervisor and/or Qualified Supervising Provider.

5. Engage in departmental and unit performance improvement initiatives.

6. Maintain current de-escalation training and apply de-escalation techniques consistently.

Education and Experience Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent is required. Prior experience is preferred.

Completion of 40 hours of designated orientation focused on autism and application of relevant techniques is mandatory.

Certification and Licensure Requirements

Valid CPR or BLS certification is required within 90 days of employment.

Completion of Managing Threatening Confrontations training (on-the-job training) is required within 90 days.

Driving Requirements:
For employees operating Mercyhealth vehicles:
Maintain a valid driver's license and adhere to the organization's driving policies.

For employees using personal vehicles:
Maintain a valid driver's license and reliable transportation, with proof of insurance available upon request.

Skills and Abilities

Computer Proficiency:
Basic computer skills are necessary to perform this role effectively.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands outlined are essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations.


While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands for handling and feeling, reach, talk, and hear. The employee may occasionally sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The role requires the ability to exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently and 25 to 50 pounds of force occasionally.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Occasional focus ability is also necessary. The employee must maintain current de-escalation training and apply de-escalation techniques regularly.
