Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate communication throughout the school day across various environments (recess, lunch, peer interactions, emergency drills) as outlined in the IEP.
  • Under the teacher's guidance, support the development of academic, communication, social, and self-care skills.
  • Assist the teacher in managing behavior and maintaining classroom order.
  • Aid in delivering instructional activities and reinforcement for students in special education.
  • Provide physical assistance to students, including lifting when necessary.
  • Supervise students during both structured and unstructured times as directed by the teacher.
  • Implement behavior management strategies for individual students or groups.
  • Support the behavior management of students by executing plans and supervising them in various settings.
  • Assist with personal care tasks as required for students (e.g., dressing, toileting, feeding).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher or school principal.
Qualifications:

  • A positive and enthusiastic demeanor with a commitment to meeting the needs of all children.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding students and their families.
  • Must obtain CPR and first aid certification shortly after starting employment.
Education and Experience:

  • Must be eligible for or possess a teaching license or Special Education Program Aide license #070, which requires three years of experience with children, three years of college coursework, or a combination equivalent to three years.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with district and school policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of safety protocols within the district and school.
Language Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting documents, including federal, state, and district regulations.
  • Capable of engaging with students in a manner that promotes a positive self-image.
  • Exercising sound judgment in interactions with students, parents, staff, and the public.
Mathematical Skills:

Competence in basic arithmetic operations and the application of concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions in practical scenarios.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and effectively resolve issues.
  • Employing problem-solving techniques to address and modify student behavior.
  • Discretion in managing confidential information regarding students.
  • Modeling and reinforcing positive behaviors expected of students.
Physical and Work Environment:

The physical and work environment described is representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of this role.

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, walk, and hear. The employee may frequently twist, bend, or crouch. The employee may occasionally lift, move, push, or pull up to 75 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this role include close, distance, and peripheral vision, along with the ability to adjust focus.
  • This position is conducted in a school environment, both indoors (classrooms, cafeteria, hallways) and outdoors.
  • Physical assistance with students, including lifting as necessary.
