Position Overview

The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Wildland Firefighter. This position is open to all U.S. citizens, and prior federal service is not a prerequisite.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage in the strategic planning, execution, and coordination of comprehensive fuels management initiatives.
  • Offer expert guidance in program oversight, financial planning, and management of fuels and prescribed fire operations.
  • Formulate and propose strategies for prescribed fire, wildland fire, and fuels treatment initiatives.
  • Conduct surveys and analyze data to establish effective treatment protocols.
  • Evaluate project proposals and provide insights for monitoring efforts.
  • Utilize and maintain fire modeling software to inform treatment strategies.
  • Participate actively in the execution of prescribed fire activities.
  • Carry out inventories and monitoring of hazardous fuels to assess their presence and types.
  • Contribute to preparedness assessments, proficiency evaluations, safety training, and post-action reviews.

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old for hazardous roles.
  • A pre-employment physical examination is required.
  • Selected candidates will undergo drug screening and must pass prior to appointment.
  • This role may necessitate regular overtime and shift work during peak fire activity periods.
  • Completion of a one-year trial or probationary period may be required.
  • A valid state driver's license is essential for operating various vehicles to transport equipment and personnel.
  • Additional specialized training and certification may be necessary for operating specific vehicles and equipment.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates must demonstrate specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level. Acceptable experience includes:

  • Knowledge of fire behavior in relation to fuels, weather, and terrain, and its impact on natural and cultural resources.
  • Experience in wildland fire operations, including planning and executing prescribed fires or managing wildfires.
  • Development and implementation of initial attack strategies to achieve resource objectives.
  • Execution of mitigation strategies during wildland fire operations to safeguard sensitive ecosystems and cultural resources.

Physical and Work Environment

Fieldwork involves physical exertion in diverse weather conditions and challenging terrains. Safety protocols and protective gear are mandatory to ensure the safety of personnel.

This position is classified under special retirement provisions, and prior service in a primary firefighting role is required for eligibility.
