Key Responsibilities
- Engages in the strategic planning, execution, and coordination of a comprehensive fuels management initiative.
- Offers expert guidance in program oversight, financial planning, fuels management, and prescribed fire operations.
- Formulates and proposes strategies for prescribed fire, wildland fire, and fuels treatment endeavors.
- Conducts assessments and analyzes data to create effective treatment prescriptions.
- Evaluates project proposals and provides insights for monitoring efforts.
- Utilizes and updates fire modeling software to support treatment recommendations.
- Assists in the execution of prescribed fire operations.
- Performs fuels management assessments and monitoring to document the presence, quantity, and types of hazardous fuels.
- Participates in preparedness evaluations, proficiency assessments, safety drills, and post-action reviews.
Employment Conditions

- This role may involve regular overtime and shift work during peak fire seasons.
- Completion of a one-year trial or probationary period may be necessary.
- A valid state driver's license is required for operating various vehicles for transporting equipment and personnel.
- Additional specialized training and certification may be required for operating specific vehicles and equipment.
Qualifications
Specialized Experience Requirements: To qualify for this position, candidates must demonstrate specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. For the GS-09 level, one year of experience equivalent to GS-08 is required. Relevant experience includes:
- Understanding fire behavior in relation to fuels, weather, and topography, and its impact on natural and cultural resources.
- Involvement in wildland fire activities, ensuring resource objectives are met from a fire management perspective.
- Development and implementation of initial attack strategies to achieve resource objectives.
- Execution of mitigation measures during wildland fire activities to safeguard sensitive habitats and cultural values.
Experience can include both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles through National Service programs and other organizations.
Selective Placement Factors: This position is classified as a key fire management role under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard. Candidates must meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to placement.
To fulfill IFPM requirements for the Prescribed Fire and Fuels Specialist - High Complexity, candidates must possess the following qualifications:
- Prescribed Fire Burn Boss, Type 2 (RXB2);
- Incident Commander, Engine Boss (ENGB), Crew Boss (CRWB), or Helicopter Manager (HMGB).
Physical Demands: Office work is primarily sedentary, while fieldwork necessitates frequent physical exertion, including traversing rough terrain and working in various weather conditions.
Work Environment: The role involves both office and field settings, with fieldwork exposing individuals to temperature extremes and hazardous conditions. Safety practices and protective gear are essential.
This position is categorized under special retirement provisions, requiring prior service in a primary firefighting role.
