As a seasoned Solid Rocket Motor Structural Analyst, your expertise will be instrumental in the development, testing, and certification of solid rocket motor propulsion systems for various NASA projects. You will provide technical oversight in the structural evaluation and design of solid rocket motor components, including motor cases, igniters, nozzles, propellants, liners, and insulation (PLI), applicable to both large boosters and specialized motors.
Your primary responsibilities will include collaborating with vehicle development teams to offer insights on solid motor systems and conducting independent analytical assessments. You will contribute to structural analyses of solid rocket motor components, fluid-structural interactions, fracture mechanics, and complex material characterization testing. Additionally, you will work alongside solid motor vendors in the development of integrated flight hardware and associated ground test equipment.

Required Qualifications:

Education:

A Bachelor’s degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) from an ABET-accredited institution in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or Engineering Mechanics with a focus on structural analysis is required. A minimum of 15 years of experience in applying finite element methods, empirical structural analysis techniques, and evaluating failure mechanisms is essential.

  • Specialized knowledge in the development and test-validation of material properties for viscoelastic PLI systems, along with the characterization of ablative composite nozzle materials is required.
  • Familiarity with major commercial finite element software such as PATRAN, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, or ANSYS is necessary.
  • Knowledge of NASA standards and specifications, as well as qualification and certification processes related to rocket propulsion systems and man-rated vehicles is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Work Environment:

This position is based in an office environment, requiring the ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and promptly, both verbally and in writing. Interaction with colleagues, management, and clients is a key component of the role. Occasional travel within the domestic USA may be required.

Physical Requirements:

The role involves extended periods of sitting during meetings and while performing engineering tasks. The ability to navigate between floors and buildings is necessary.

Equipment and Machines:

Ability to operate standard office equipment, including personal computers, telephones, fax machines, copiers, and calculators is required.

Attendance:

Regular attendance is essential, with a standard workday typically running from early morning to late afternoon. Minimal overtime may be necessary to meet project deadlines.

Other Essential Functions:

Independence in decision-making and exercising sound judgment is crucial. Professional grooming and attire appropriate for the position are expected.
