As a seasoned Solid Rocket Motor Structural Analyst, your knowledge will be instrumental in the design, testing, and certification of solid rocket motor propulsion systems for various NASA projects. You will oversee the structural evaluation and design of solid rocket motor components, including motor casing, igniter, nozzle, propellant, liner, and insulation (PLI), for both large boosters and specialized motors.
Your primary responsibilities will involve collaborating with vehicle development teams to provide insights on solid motor systems and conducting independent analytical evaluations. You will contribute to structural analyses of solid rocket motor components, fluid-structural interactions, fracture mechanics, and complex material characterization testing. Additionally, you will work alongside solid motor suppliers in the development of integrated flight hardware and related ground test apparatus.

Required Qualifications:

Educational Background:

A Bachelor’s degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) from an ABET-accredited institution in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or Engineering Mechanics with a focus on structural analysis is essential. A minimum of 15 years of experience applying finite element methods, empirical structural analysis techniques, and evaluating failure mechanisms is required.

  • Specialized knowledge in the development and validation of material properties for viscoelastic PLI systems, along with the characterization of ablative composite nozzle materials is necessary.
  • Proficiency in one or more major commercial finite element software such as PATRAN, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, or ANSYS is required.
  • Familiarity with NASA standards and specifications, as well as qualification and certification processes related to rocket propulsion systems and crewed vehicles is highly advantageous.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Work Environment:

This role is primarily office-based. It requires the ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and promptly, both verbally and in writing. Professional interaction with colleagues, management, and clients is expected. Occasional travel within the domestic USA may be required.

Physical Requirements:

Position involves sitting for extended periods during meetings and while performing engineering tasks. Ability to navigate between floors and buildings using stairs or elevators is necessary.

Equipment and Machines:

Ability to operate standard office equipment such as personal computers, telephones, fax machines, copiers, and calculators is required.

Attendance:

The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday. Some overtime may be necessary to meet project deadlines and technical demands. Regular attendance is crucial, and arrangements for delegating responsibilities during absences must be made.

Other Essential Functions:

Independence in work with minimal supervision, sound decision-making, and good judgment are critical. Professional grooming and attire appropriate for the role are required.
