As a seasoned Solid Rocket Motor Structural Analyst, your expertise will be crucial in the development, testing, and certification of solid rocket motor propulsion systems for various NASA projects. You will provide technical oversight in the structural evaluation and design of solid rocket motor components, including motor cases, igniters, nozzles, propellants, liners, and insulation (PLI), applicable to both large boosters and specialized motors.
Key responsibilities include collaborating with vehicle development teams to offer insights on solid motor systems, as well as producing independent analytical evaluations. You will contribute to structural analyses of solid rocket motor components, including fluid-structural interactions, fracture mechanics, and advanced material characterization testing. Additionally, you will work alongside solid motor vendors in the development of integrated flight hardware and related ground test equipment.

Required Qualifications:

Essential Skills:

A Bachelor’s degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) from an ABET-accredited institution in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or Engineering Mechanics with a focus on structural analysis is required. A minimum of 15 years of experience in applying finite element methods, empirical structural analysis techniques, and evaluating failure mechanisms is essential.

  • Specialized knowledge in the development and test-validation of material properties for viscoelastic PLI systems, along with expertise in ablative composite nozzle materials is required.
  • Familiarity with major commercial finite element software such as PATRAN, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, or ANSYS is necessary.
  • Knowledge of NASA standards and specifications, as well as qualification and certification processes related to rocket propulsion systems and crewed vehicles is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Work Environment:
