Under the general oversight of the Chief Lead Technician, the Ophthalmic Care Technician is responsible for a variety of tasks including preparing patients for consultations with the physician, conducting preliminary examinations, gathering medical histories, and performing essential testing. This role also involves the preparation of examination and treatment areas, executing basic vision screenings, administering ocular medications, maintaining ophthalmic instruments, and assisting physicians during minor surgical and laser interventions.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver primary ophthalmic care and serve as a clinical assistant to the physician.
  • Verify patient details through interviews, documenting medical histories, and confirming the purpose of visits.
  • Conduct comprehensive ophthalmic histories and preliminary assessments, including specialized tests such as refraction, visual field tests, and tonometry.
  • Document all findings accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  • Evaluate the condition of patients' eyes through slit lamp examinations and other assessments.
  • Prepare patients for ophthalmic evaluations by administering pupil dilation and communicating changes in visual acuity.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information by managing medical records and diagnostic orders.
  • Provide patient counseling regarding physician's orders, medication usage, and surgical procedures.
  • Ensure equipment functionality by adhering to operating protocols, troubleshooting issues, and maintaining necessary supplies.
  • Handle patient communications, including phone calls and prescription refill requests.
  • Perform a standard number of patient work-ups while upholding quality customer service.
  • Manage the cleanliness and stocking of examination rooms and treatment areas.
  • Prepare instruments for sterilization and assist in minor surgical procedures.
  • Adhere to departmental policies and legal regulations to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Be flexible to work at various locations as required.

Qualifications:
  • Required: Minimum of one year of experience in optometry or ophthalmology, performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing.
  • Preferred: Two years of experience in ophthalmology, Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credentials, and experience in an academic healthcare setting.
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of an Ophthalmic Assistant Program or certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) is preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift 20-50 lbs.
  • Prolonged standing and walking.

Skills:
  • Strong recall, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
