Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Technician to join our team at Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems. As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting our ophthalmology team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for ophthalmology examinations by dilating pupils, checking visual acuity, and documenting abnormalities.
  • Perform complete ophthalmic history and preliminary exams, including sub-specialty testing and diagnostic ordering.
  • Accurately record patient information in the EMR system and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Assist physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures, and maintain a safe and secure work environment.
  • Perform routine vision screening examinations, administer eye medications, and clean and maintain ophthalmic instruments.
  • Counsel patients on the use of drops, contact lenses, and other eye care products, and answer questions about surgery and specialty imaging.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies, and perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Handle patient phone calls, messages, and prescription refill requests, and provide excellent customer service.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Ophthalmic Assistant Program or Certified Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  • Minimum one year of work experience in optometric/ophthalmology performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing; two years of experience preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive patient information.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent and intense customer interactions.
Working Conditions

This position requires prolonged standing, walking, and the ability to lift 20-50 pounds. The work environment is fast-paced and requires strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
