Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Technician to join our team at Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems. As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and assisting physicians during ophthalmic examinations and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for ophthalmic examinations by conducting preliminary exams, recording medical history, and confirming the purpose of the visit.
  • Perform basic and routine vision screening examinations, including refraction, visual acuity, and tonometry.
  • Administer eye medications and clean and maintain ophthalmic instruments.
  • Assist physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures.
  • Verify patient information and accurately record all information in the EMR system.
  • Check the condition of patients' eyes by performing slit lamp examinations and documenting abnormalities.
  • Prepare patients for ophthalmology examinations by dilating pupils and communicating results to the attending physician.
  • Secure patient information and maintain patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records.
  • Counsel patients by transmitting physician's orders and answering questions about surgery and specialty imaging.
  • Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, and performing preventive maintenance.
  • Handle patient phone calls, messages, and prescription refill requests.
  • Perform a standard number of patient work-ups based on established times while maintaining the quality of customer service.
  • Open and close examination rooms, ensuring that equipment is cleaned and stocked properly.
  • Maintain stock in the exam room and prepare instruments for sterilization or high-level disinfection.
  • Set up and prepare for minor OR procedures, including setting sterile trays and maintaining the sterile field.
Requirements
  • Minimum of one year of work experience in optometric/ophthalmology performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing.
  • Successful completion of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Ophthalmic Medical Assisting Course within 12 months.
  • Obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel (JCAHPO) within 24 months of hire date.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years of work experience in ophthalmology performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification.
  • Previous experience in an academic healthcare environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged standing and walking.
  • Lifting 20-50 pounds.
Mental/Sensory Requirements
  • Strong recall and reasoning skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and frequent customer interactions.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent change.
