Position Overview: The Underwriting Department at Allied National, Inc. leverages comprehensive knowledge of our products, plan documents, underwriting guidelines, and technological systems. This role involves applying sound judgment to evaluate risks and establish pricing strategies that ensure the profitability of both new and renewal business.

Team Collaboration: The underwriter will engage in a collaborative team environment, drawing on their own expertise as well as the knowledge of their colleagues. A key aspect of this role is to deliver services in a positive, professional, and thorough manner, reinforcing Allied's reputation as a service-oriented organization.

Communication: As a representative of Allied underwriting, effective communication with Account Executives and clients is essential. Utilizing medical expertise for risk assessment and rate recommendations is a fundamental requirement.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in all functions outlined in Levels 1, 2, and 3, adhering to departmental quality and productivity standards.
  2. Underwrite new business in accordance with established guidelines, determining group eligibility for health insurance based on comprehensive reviews of eligibility data.
  3. Analyze Medical Load Reports prepared by Level 2 and assess medical risks accordingly.
  4. Evaluate Participation Worksheets and Group Eligibility documents prepared by Level 2.
  5. Review current carrier bills and renewal rates, comparing them to census data and Allied-generated rates.
  6. Conduct employer outreach and, when necessary, contact individual applicants for additional health information or clarification.
  7. Issue final new business rates and prepare any alternative quotes approved by Level 4.
  8. Create Self-Funded Accounts in the AI system.
  9. Review pre-screens completed by Level 2 and document findings for Level 4 review.
  10. Assess health renewals and input data into spreadsheets.
  11. Compile summaries of claim referrals to evaluate medical eligibility, subject to Level 4 finalization.
  12. Summarize IDC complaints for Level 4 review.
  13. Manage appropriate contact management and UAS mailbox tasks.
  14. Determine rates for additions to Ancillary Products.
  15. Review recommendations from Level II regarding Ancillary late enrollee and Short Term medical rewrite applications.
  16. Analyze monthly manual dental renewals and provide rating recommendations for underwriting management approval.
  17. Conduct quality reviews to ensure accuracy of Dental Monthly renewals.
  18. Meet established departmental standards for quality and productivity.

Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. One to two years of relevant work experience or equivalent college education.
  3. Certification in Medical Terminology I and II.
  4. Ability to interpret information from product brochures, certificates, and insurance contracts.
  5. Proficient in spoken and written English, with strong communication skills.
  6. Basic mathematical abilities.
  7. Demonstrated decision-making capabilities and the ability to work independently.
  8. Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  9. Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  10. Capacity to sit or stand at a workstation for extended periods.
  11. Ability to manage stress related to deadlines and challenging interactions.
  12. Compliance with departmental training, quality, and production standards.
  13. Minimum of 4 years of office experience or equivalent college education.
  14. Strong knowledge of medical terminology.
  15. Minimum of 3 years of experience in the insurance sector, with 1-2 years in group and individual medical underwriting preferred, or equivalent medical background.
