Position Title: Seasonal BASE Field Studies Coordinator

Department: Education

Reports to: BASE Partnership Manager

FLSA Status: Part-time Seasonal, Non-exempt

Compensation: $24 per hour

Position Summary:

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) is seeking a seasonal coordinator for the BASE Field Studies initiative. This outdoor program is tailored specifically for ninth-grade students at the Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment (BASE), a small public high school that collaborates with the Garden. The Field Studies program enhances the Living Environment curriculum by utilizing the ecological and scientific resources of the Garden and the adjacent Prospect Park, allowing students to explore living organisms and the environmental characteristics of various ecosystems.


Key Responsibilities:

Fall Term:

  • Collaborate with BASE science educators and the Field Studies instructor to design and prepare the eight-week fall curriculum.
  • Conduct four weekly in-person Field Studies sessions outdoors at BBG and Prospect Park, as well as in classrooms, from late September through early December, with assistance from the Field Studies instructor and BASE science teachers.
  • Coordinate with BBG staff to facilitate student access to field resources and equipment, managing materials required for each class session.
  • Potentially support the BASE Garden Crew, an after-school program where students engage in planting, maintaining, and harvesting produce in the BASE Garden bed, alongside cooking and team-building activities.

Spring Term:

  • Develop and prepare the spring semester curriculum for ninth-grade Field Studies, including laboratory work, outdoor explorations, field trips, and final projects.
  • Lead the course with assistance from the BASE science teacher, who will support lessons and activities.
  • Coordinate with BBG staff to ensure student access to field resources and manage materials necessary for the course.
  • Assist all BASE science department educators in planning and facilitating science investigations at BBG and organizing field trips to various organizations.
  • Support the BASE Partnership Manager with school-wide events and partnership initiatives, including sustainability projects.
  • May assist with the BASE Garden Crew, engaging students in gardening and culinary activities.


Work Schedule:

  • Fall Term: 35 hours per week, Monday–Friday
  • Spring Term: 35 hours per week, Monday–Friday

This role includes designated planning periods before the course begins and between the fall and spring terms, with no work scheduled on school holidays.


Work Environment:

  • Classes primarily take place outdoors, regardless of weather conditions, at BBG and various locations within Prospect Park.
  • In the fall semester, the coordinator and instructor prepare class materials for outdoor sessions; in the spring semester, the coordinator leads the preparation.
  • Classrooms at BBG are utilized for lesson introductions and activities, particularly during inclement weather.
  • The coordinator will have access to a desktop computer in the Education office at BBG for lesson planning and preparation.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in natural science, environmental studies, education, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience in teaching adolescents.
  • Experience in outdoor education settings.
  • Ability to obtain security clearance as required by educational regulations for working with students.
