The Biostatistics Center (BSC) at The George Washington University is a prominent research facility located in Rockville, Maryland. The Systems Support team at the Biostatistics Center is in search of a full-time Systems Engineer II. This role encompasses a comprehensive range of software and hardware support for both on-site and remote clients. The Systems Engineer II will engage in the design, implementation, engineering, and administration of Linux computing systems, including hardware, software, network, and storage infrastructure, which are essential for a 24/7 mission-critical environment. This position is vital for maintaining the IT infrastructure that supports the research activities of the Biostatistics Center.



This senior-level role is responsible for managing various infrastructure systems independently, ensuring the maintenance and expansion of services and production infrastructure. Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing, implementing, and supporting Linux computing systems and their associated hardware and software.
  • Administering and maintaining Linux server operating systems within a complex computing environment.
  • Creating and implementing secure IT solutions in a dynamic research setting using open-source tools.
  • Provisioning bare metal and/or virtual server installations and configurations.
  • Conducting operating system upgrades and patching.
  • Collaborating with team members to optimize server functionality and ensure infrastructure availability.
  • Developing and maintaining technical documentation.
  • Performing network administration, security monitoring, and backup procedures.
  • Identifying organizational needs and developing solutions to address them.
  • Contributing to system standards and security practices in line with best practices.


Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates should possess a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field along with 7 years of pertinent professional experience, or a Master's degree with 5 years of relevant experience. The degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may also be considered.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with scripting languages and automation.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills to provide exceptional support to users.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as IBM Z Systems, LinuxONE servers, and Linux on System Z.
  • Experience with IBM z/VM or Linux KVM as hypervisors.
  • Knowledge of building and maintaining x86 server hardware and storage solutions.
  • Proficiency in SUSE Linux, MySQL, MariaDB, and Apache Tomcat.


Compensation:

The hiring range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience.
