We are currently in search of a Linux Systems Engineer to contribute to our operations.

Program Objective:

This initiative offers comprehensive infrastructure support to a prominent federal agency, encompassing server architecture design and upkeep, application hosting and management, as well as implementing fixes and upgrade patches while ensuring compliance with cybersecurity regulations. You will be part of a team that harmonizes process-oriented IT operations with Lean engineering principles, fostering a culture of continuous improvement alongside innovative and high-quality support services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Engage in hands-on design and implementation of servers using Oracle Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Ubuntu, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux in both on-premises and cloud settings.
  • Provide consultation and guidance to federal clients and associated developers in crafting Linux-based solutions, planning installations, and serving as a mentor and escalation point for the operations and maintenance of a multi-tiered server infrastructure.
  • Oversee the testing and deployment of services and applications developed by other contractor teams, ensuring compliance with federal policy guidelines.
  • Monitor, assess, and plan for capacity while designing enterprise-grade, fault-tolerant systems utilizing various Linux distributions, and support development initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with team members across different functional areas to maintain and enhance server security.
  • Work with various internal and external team members to successfully complete day-to-day tasks and ongoing infrastructure support projects, leading efforts to improve standard operating procedures and technical documentation.
  • Identify hardware and software platform issues, collaborating with teammates to implement necessary patches and updates.
  • Support performance optimization and recommend enhancements, troubleshoot and resolve performance-related issues, along with other assigned duties.
Experience Requirements:
  • At least 4 years of experience working with Linux servers is essential.
  • Familiarity with configuration management tools such as Puppet.
  • Experience with patch management tools like Satellite and Oracle Linux Manager.
  • Background in compiling and deploying open-source software.
  • Experience in IT Engineering roles.
  • Knowledge of secure, tiered application hosting environments.
  • Understanding of HTTP, DNS, Internet Protocol, and the OSI Model.
  • Experience in server vulnerability remediation in accordance with agency, DHS, and/or DoD STIG Guidelines, including SSL, DNS, and cipher issues.
  • Familiarity with data transfer protocols such as GridFTP.
  • Professional IT experience in a large, distributed data center environment.
  • Experience managing SSL/TLS certificates for web servers (creation, application, troubleshooting).
Essential Skills:
  • Ability to work hands-on to design and continuously enhance Linux servers.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automating routine tasks in Linux environments.
  • Exposure to Amazon AWS or Microsoft Azure engineering and/or administration.
  • Familiarity with load balancers such as F5 BigIP.
  • Experience with server management systems like BigFix or LANrev.
  • Knowledge of server and application deployment automation systems such as Kickstart, Jenkins, and Docker.
  • Strong troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Familiarity with performance monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with customers, team members, and management.
  • Proven customer service skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work in a dynamic environment.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in building, configuring, and monitoring web server system components; LDAP Authentication and compiling open-source applications.
  • Programming or scripting background in one or more of the following: Java, C/C++, PHP, or any scripting languages (BASH, Python, Ruby, Perl, etc.).
  • Established documentation skills.
Educational Background:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field is preferred.
Certifications:
  • One or more of the following certifications is preferred:
    • Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA).
    • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE).
    • ITIL Foundations certification.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal Public Trust/Suitability.
Communication Skills:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong ability to interface, inspire, and motivate at various organizational levels.
  • Ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Proven experience in effective communication across internal and external organizations.
Travel Requirements:
  • Availability for occasional after-hours and weekend support.
  • Willingness to work onsite as required.
Environmental Considerations:
  • Primarily sedentary work in an office environment.
  • May require lifting up to ten (10) pounds.
  • Flexibility in working extended hours may be necessary.
