Chicago, Illinois, United States National Louis University Full time

Position Overview:

OPPORTUNITY

The National College of Education (NCE) at National Louis University (NLU) is in search of a knowledgeable and dynamic educator for a full-time faculty role in Special Education Professional Practice at the Assistant Professor level. This position is part of NLU's recently updated graduate program, which provides various pathways for earning a master's degree and/or licensure in special education, including MEd and MAT programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for instructing both current and prospective special educators, equipping them with the necessary skills to implement culturally responsive classroom instruction and assessment strategies tailored to diverse student needs.

The ideal candidate will actively engage in inclusive teaching practices and curriculum development while contributing to the program and college through service. A strong understanding of special education laws, current trends, and high-leverage teaching practices is essential. The candidate should also aspire to cultivate a research agenda that promotes social and educational justice for students with disabilities.

ABOUT NLU

NLU's National College of Education recognizes the profound impact of serving PreK-22 students as educators and leaders. Our collaborative approach with students at all educational levels—from initial teacher preparation to advanced professional programs—guides our mission to develop today's educators and tomorrow's leaders.

Our programs are designed with a focus on student needs, and our graduates often highlight the exceptional quality of our faculty, convenient course offerings, and affordability. Most importantly, our commitment to progressive education has a tangible impact, with NCE graduates serving in a significant percentage of Illinois public schools and Chicago Public Schools, collectively influencing the lives of thousands of students annually.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate is a lifelong learner who is passionate about teaching and recognizes the transformative power of education. You view disability as a vital aspect of human diversity rather than a limitation. Understanding the complexity of student identities, you are committed to inclusive and affirming educational practices for all learners. Your experience spans various educational contexts, and you have effectively led initiatives that foster meaningful change within classrooms, schools, or communities.

Additionally, you possess a strong interest in research and theory related to teaching and disability, which informs your educational practices. You value collaboration and respect the diverse perspectives and experiences of your students and colleagues. Your motivation stems from a desire to contribute to a learning community that prioritizes academic excellence through the affirmation of human diversity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a teaching load of 24 semester hours of graduate courses across multiple terms.
  • Develop and teach core special education courses while fostering an inclusive learning environment for all students, along with advising and mentoring graduate students.
  • Engage in thought leadership as a professional practice faculty member, collaborating on curriculum development, grant proposals, and extracurricular activities.
  • Contribute to university service through mentoring, program improvement, recruitment, and accreditation efforts.
  • Support initiatives addressing educational justice through an intersectional lens, including curriculum development and participation in committees.
  • Enhance community engagement and partnerships with local agencies and schools.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Earned doctorate in Special Education or related fields, with ABD status considered if the dissertation is completed by a specified timeframe.
  2. A minimum of 5 years of PreK-22 teaching experience in diverse special education settings.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity initiatives within educational contexts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience teaching in urban environments with a focus on social justice.
  2. Familiarity with collaborative and participatory research methodologies.
  3. Proficiency in assistive and instructional technology, with experience across various teaching modalities.
  4. Expertise in literacy, math, and practicum courses relevant to our programs.
  5. Experience working with students with varying disability designations.
  6. Knowledge of Practice-Based Teaching and High-Leverage Practices.
  7. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

We strive to foster a culture where diversity, equity, and inclusion are integral to our identity. We recognize that differences in abilities, age, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, and background enrich our work environment.
