Job Title: Juvenile Services Specialist I

This is a great opportunity to work with the City of Chesapeake's Juvenile Services team. As a Juvenile Services Specialist I, you will play a critical role in supporting and supervising juveniles in a secure detention setting.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct daily activities of residents in programming, utilizing acceptable behavioral management principles.
  • Exercise independent judgment in crisis situations, ensuring the safety of residents, staff, and visitors.
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions, develop and manage case management files, and transport residents to appointments.
  • Plan and coordinate recreational activities, complete daily room and unit audits, and assist the nurse as a medical agent.
  • Physically restrain unruly residents to prevent self-injury and ensure the safety of others.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma and formal training or special courses equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in criminal justice, law enforcement, or a closely related field.
  • Valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City of Chesapeake policies.
  • Handle With Care, CPR, and First Aid certifications within 45 days of hire.
  • Minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience, preferably in group counseling sessions in a group home, detention center, or non-secure residential setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • General knowledge of interviewing techniques and adolescent psychology.
  • Thorough knowledge of laws and procedures related to juvenile detainees.
  • Ability to counsel and conduct interviews of a personal, sensitive nature.
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city agency officials, court personnel, co-workers, residents, and residents' parents or guardians.
