Position Overview and Primary Functions

The Boys & Girls Club of Newark is a vibrant and dedicated non-profit organization focused on fostering the comprehensive development of young individuals within our community. Through a trauma-informed approach, we aim to cultivate a secure and supportive environment where youth can grow, learn, and succeed.

In this part-time/seasonal role, responsibilities include but are not limited to establishing and maintaining a safe physical and emotional environment, overseeing children during program hours, and planning and executing our core program areas - Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, Healthy Life Skills, and the Arts.

As a Youth Development Professional emphasizing trauma-informed practices, you will be instrumental in directly engaging and supporting youth participants, crafting and delivering stimulating programming, and ensuring that our organization's trauma-informed principles and Youth Development Practices are woven into every aspect of our work. Your commitment and expertise will enhance the emotional well-being, personal growth, and resilience of the youth we serve.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Trauma-Informed Practices Integration

  • Embed trauma-informed principles into all program elements, interactions, and activities, prioritizing the physical, emotional, and psychological safety of youth participants.
  • Implement strategies to prevent trauma, such as providing choices, respecting boundaries, and fostering a sense of agency.
  • Utilize trauma-informed training to identify signs of distress and crisis in youth participants and deliver immediate interventions using de-escalation techniques and crisis management protocols.
  • Offer emotional support and guidance during challenging situations, assisting youth in developing healthy coping mechanisms and resilience.
  • Quickly address unacceptable behavior, such as arguing or fighting, using positive discipline and trauma-informed practices.

Direct Service

  • Build meaningful and trust-based relationships with youth participants, creating a safe and supportive environment for self-expression and sharing experiences.
  • Promote a physically and emotionally secure atmosphere for youth.
  • Employ active listening and empathetic communication to understand the unique needs, strengths, and challenges of each youth, considering their trauma histories.
  • Provide homework assistance and collaborate with school leadership and teachers to gain insights into youth's daily experiences and learning.
  • Work with youth to establish realistic goals and monitor progress, adjusting support strategies as necessary to meet evolving needs.
  • Stay informed about the latest research, theories, and best practices in trauma-informed care and youth development.
  • Attend all mandatory training sessions and fulfill all training requirements for the role.
  • Serve as a positive role model for youth participants, demonstrating resilience, empathy, and healthy coping strategies.
  • Guide and mentor less experienced staff members, sharing expertise in trauma-informed practices.
  • Maintain professionalism during working hours, adhering to uniform guidelines.
  • Collaborate with staff on special events and facilitate programs across departments as needed.

Program Development and Delivery

  • Partner with the program team to design innovative and culturally sensitive youth programs that align with trauma-informed practices, fostering healing, empowerment, and skill development.
  • Plan and execute engaging activities, programs, and events that cater to various age groups and developmental stages, encouraging personal growth and positive self-expression.
  • Conduct emotional check-ins with youth and team members at the beginning and throughout the day.

Collaboration and Networking

  • Work closely with fellow staff members, community partners, schools, and families to ensure a coordinated approach to supporting youth participants.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, training, and collaborative initiatives aimed at enhancing outcomes for young individuals.

Evaluation and Documentation

  • Regularly evaluate the effectiveness and impact of youth programs, collecting data and documenting outcomes to inform continuous improvement.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of youth interactions, progress, and milestones in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Complete incident reports as necessary following organizational procedures.
  • Adhere to all Child Care Licensing requirements and policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Be prepared to attend full-day field trips as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent required; minimum High School Diploma.
  • Four years of experience working with youth and families in a school or afterschool setting required.
  • Participate in staff training outside of regular work hours.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and DOJ/FBI fingerprint clearance.
  • Must pass a Child Abuse Background Check (CARI).
  • CPR certification preferred.
  • Strong tutoring background in English, Mathematics, and Science.
  • Required medical physical examination with a negative TB test.
  • COVID vaccination required, including all relevant boosters.
  • Must understand, represent, and appreciate the mission of The Boys & Girls Club of Newark.
