PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the Accounting Manager, the incumbent will oversee all financial reporting and accounting functions related to designated funds. This role involves performing necessary reconciliation tasks to maintain the integrity of the accounting system. The individual will compile, analyze, and prepare financial data for accurate general ledger entries and sub-systems. Additionally, the role includes assisting in the preparation of schedules for the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and the Single Audit Report (SAR) as needed.

The Senior Accountant will prepare audit documentation for annual or special audits for assigned areas and support external auditors during the audit process. Responsibilities also include making adjusting and closing entries, as well as reviewing journal entries from other departments for accuracy and compliance with funding requirements. The individual will ensure timely updates and verification of transaction postings to the general ledger and other financial systems.

Financial statements and supporting documentation will be prepared, with a focus on enhancing accounting systems through procedural recommendations. The incumbent will maintain a thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and utilize automated accounting systems to provide financial reports and information. This includes preparing balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and other specialized financial reports.

Moreover, the Senior Accountant will reconcile general ledger account balances and document month-end and year-end transactions. The role may involve managing special projects of varying complexity and conducting research on current and emerging accounting standards, summarizing findings for management presentations. Adherence to established internal accounting controls is crucial for maintaining financial security. The incumbent will also interpret city policies and procedures for external stakeholders and auditors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position primarily involves desk work and requires effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with management, staff, and external auditors. Proficiency in using general office equipment, including personal computers, calculators, and telephones, is necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field is required, along with seven (7) years of relevant experience in Accounting or Finance. Candidates must obtain CMFO certification within 24 months of hire and maintain it as a condition of continued employment in the Accountant III tier. Demonstrated advanced knowledge of GAAP is essential, along with experience using Microsoft Office applications. CPA or MBA credentials are preferred, as is experience in governmental or non-profit accounting. Familiarity with Oracle Financials is an advantage.
