Position Overview

The role of the Materials Development Engineer is pivotal in advancing Corning Optical Communications' initiatives on a global scale. This position involves close collaboration with the Global Materials Group and the materials teams located at Sullivan Park.

Key Responsibilities

As a Materials Development Engineer, you will:

  • Lead the development of materials for optical communication applications, utilizing your expertise in polymer science and engineering.
  • Support the selection and assessment of polymer compounds for various cable applications and hardware products, including connectors and closures.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for product and project engineers, aiding in the development of new products and processes.
  • Utilize innovative problem-solving techniques to address materials-related challenges in manufacturing.

Essential Functions

Your role will also include:

  • Conducting research and experiments to enhance product understanding and development.
  • Applying advanced scientific principles to tackle research and development challenges.
  • Collaborating with suppliers to evaluate new materials and maintain effective relationships.
  • Leading materials-focused development efforts to achieve both short-term and long-term research goals.
  • Balancing hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities.
  • Documenting and communicating research findings effectively.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you should possess:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in materials science, engineering, or chemistry.
  • Experience with thermoplastic polymers and product development.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to develop new testing methods.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional qualifications that would be beneficial include:

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Knowledge of engineering thermoplastics and polymer characterization methods.
  • Experience with product lifetime evaluation and international work experience.
