Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Qualifications as mandated by "No Child Left Behind" regulations:
    • Associate's Degree, or
    • Completion of 48 semester hours of college coursework, or
    • Successful completion of a series of Work Keys Tests plus 96 contact hours of relevant professional development.
  • Valid Driver's License with a commendable driving history.
  • CDL License with a passenger school bus endorsement and a current Bus Drivers Pocket Card.
Nature of Work

An Educational Support Specialist/Bus Driver assists educators in delivering instruction to students. This role encompasses a variety of responsibilities aimed at facilitating the teaching-learning process. The tasks are guided by specific instructions, established precedents, and school policies. The employee operates vehicles of varying sizes to transport students along designated or special routes, working under the limited supervision of the educator and/or principal.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Awareness of the school organization and its community context.
  • Knowledge of child development stages and expected behaviors.
  • Ability to operate audiovisual equipment and standard office devices.

  • Comprehension of teacher-designed strategies to achieve instructional goals.
  • Ability to identify significant student behaviors and communicate these to supervisors.
  • Skill in conveying information at a level appropriate for students.
  • Capacity to apply fair and consistent methods of recognition and discipline.
  • Ability to independently resolve minor issues.
  • Competence in following detailed written and verbal instructions without constant oversight.
  • Proficiency in accurately recording and managing data.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Thorough knowledge of safe and efficient practices in school bus operation.
  • Solid understanding of traffic laws and regulations governing school buses.
  • General knowledge of safety standards for school transportation.
  • Ability to perform physical inspections of the bus as per operational guidelines.
  • Skill in identifying and reporting mechanical issues with the school bus.
  • Ability to maintain student discipline during bus rides.
  • Commitment to keeping the school bus clean and orderly.
  • Capability to complete necessary reports accurately.
  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Capacity to exercise independent judgment and initiative in various work situations.
  • Ability to interact courteously with parents, guardians, students, and school staff.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships as required by job duties.

  • Records and reports attendance accurately.
  • Maintains health records for students.
  • Documents student behavior as necessary.
  • Files data in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Supervises students in various settings within the school environment.
  • Creates and distributes awards to encourage positive behavior.
  • Promotes self-esteem and social skills among students.
  • Facilitates conflict resolution among students.
  • Contributes to the development of discipline policies.
  • Implements approved disciplinary measures for misbehavior.
  • Reports behavioral issues to the educator or principal.
  • Communicates significant changes in student behavior to supervisors.
  • Administers basic first aid and seeks assistance for serious injuries or illnesses.
  • Adheres to all safety regulations and standards for school bus operation, including emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Maintains discipline among students during bus rides, implementing a consistent discipline plan.
  • Ensures students are discharged only at authorized locations.
  • Transports only students who are authorized to ride.
  • Keeps the bus clean and free of debris that may pose safety risks.
  • Reports accidents as required and remains at the scene until released by the appropriate authority.
  • Completes time cards and necessary reports, including those related to accidents.
  • Maintains oversight of all students on the bus during incidents, ensuring their safety.
  • Secures the bus after completing routes, ensuring all windows and doors are locked.
  • Fosters positive relationships with parents and school personnel.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
