Position Overview

The Liver Transplant Anesthesia Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, VA is a one-year non-ACGME accredited program designed to train future leaders in liver transplant anesthesiology.

Responsibilities and Expectations

The fellow will have the opportunity to develop clinical expertise through hands-on experience in pre-transplant candidate assessments for the multi-disciplinary liver transplant selection committee. They will work closely with transplant hepatology, transfusion medicine, and transplant critical care medicine teams.

The fellow will spend approximately two days per week as an attending anesthesiologist supervising a mix of general operating room cases, allowing them to maintain their skills in clinical anesthesiology and earn supplemental income.

In addition, the fellow will receive a stipend for professional development, including conferences, books, and other approved academic resources. Dedicated time will be allocated for academic projects, and resources will be provided to support obtaining basic certification in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • MD or DO degree
  • ABA board eligible/certified in anesthesiology
  • Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia
  • Excellent communication, clinical, and teaching skills
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so
Compensation and Benefits

The estimated annual salary for this position is $250,000 - $300,000, depending on qualifications and experience. In addition to the competitive salary, the fellow will receive a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
