Role Summary

The Chief Accountant/Director of Managerial Accounting plays a pivotal role in overseeing the Accounting department within Schnackel Engineers Inc. This position encompasses a wide range of accounting responsibilities, including payroll management, accounts receivable and payable oversight, invoicing, vendor payments, and various administrative tasks. The role integrates both operational accounting and support functions.

The Chief Accountant/Director maintains daily communication with the CEO and CFO, ensuring alignment on financial operations and reporting. This position reports directly to the CEO.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee payroll calculations and controls, coordinating with an external payroll service.
  2. Manage payroll-related accounting tasks, including onboarding, bonus calculations, and addressing employee inquiries regarding pay rates and HR matters.
  3. Facilitate the setup of new employees in the payroll system and 401(k) accounts.
  4. Conduct Form I-9 Employee Verifications.
  5. Provide notarization services as required.
  6. Prepare invoices bi-monthly, utilizing the internal ERP system for automation.
  7. Supervise the collection of reimbursable expenses and manage invoicing to clients, overseeing the Collection and Reimbursable Expenses Accountant.
  8. Ensure timely collection of accounts receivable, including direct communication with clients and oversight of the Collection Specialist.
  9. Process weekly and monthly bill payments, including online transactions and check issuance.
  10. Handle check deposits and account reconciliations.
  11. Generate monthly reports in accordance with the accounting cycle.
  12. Prepare managerial reports, noting that financial analysis is not a responsibility of this role.
  13. Ensure compliance with business transaction processes and accounting document flow procedures.
  14. Contribute to the development and approval of standard operating procedures (SOP) for the accounting department.
  15. Lead project management initiatives for new accounting software implementations, facilitating communication among developers, IT, auditors, and the accounting team.
  16. Execute specific directives from the CEO regarding managerial accounting matters.
  17. Monitor the activities of accountants involved in supplier and contractor transactions.
  18. Oversee managerial accountants handling internal business transactions.
  19. Implement necessary software enhancements to maintain and automate the Company's accounting processes.
  20. Provide training to accounting department staff as needed.
  21. Ensure accuracy in managerial reporting.
  22. Calculate and ensure timely payment of state taxes.
  23. Supply the CFO with all necessary information for financial statement consolidation, analysis, budgeting, and control.
  24. Participate in the budgeting process.

Candidate Profile:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Financial Management is required; a Master's degree is preferred. Additional accounting certifications are advantageous.
  • Proficiency in accounting software such as Sage or QuickBooks is essential.
  • A minimum of five years of accounting experience is required.
  • Five years of HR experience is a plus.
  • Experience as a Chief Accountant or Deputy Accountant in small to medium-sized or family-owned businesses is preferred.
  • Strong communication and project management skills are necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently while collaborating with other accountants, clients, and executives.
