Position Overview

The City of Gaithersburg is in search of a dedicated and collaborative leader to manage and direct the operations and initiatives within the Department of Planning and Code Administration. This department plays a crucial role in facilitating sustainable growth and orderly development within the city while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations governing residential and commercial construction.

Key Responsibilities

The Chief of Planning and Code Oversight will provide strategic leadership and professional guidance to the department and its personnel, focusing on both short- and long-term planning initiatives. Responsibilities include:
  • Overseeing the adoption and revision of the City’s master planning documents, zoning regulations, and environmental codes.
  • Managing the permitting and inspection processes to ensure compliance with established codes and ordinances.
  • Collaborating with the City Manager and other department heads to align departmental strategies with the city’s overall mission and objectives.
  • Supervising a team of four direct reports and managing a departmental budget of approximately $4.2 million.


Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:
  • A Master’s Degree in Urban Studies, Urban & Regional Planning, Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience in planning and code administration, including at least five (5) years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Proven experience in fostering collaborative relationships with community organizations and leading effective community engagement efforts.


Preferred Qualifications

Additional qualifications that would be advantageous include:
  • Experience in local government operations.
  • Direct experience working with elected officials.
  • Certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
