THE TEAM: The Marin County Employees' Retirement Association (MCERA) supports the Retirement Board in managing the retirement system. The membership of the Association encompasses employees from nine different employers. In fulfilling its duties, MCERA collects contributions from members and employers, calculates and disburses retirement and death benefits, administers medical benefits for most retirees, and provides education and customer service to members and employers.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Retirement Benefits Technician role centers on delivering services to retired members, which includes processing retiree payroll and related tasks, managing medical plans, and offering associated customer service. The position may also serve as the department's Disability Coordinator and/or undertake other responsibilities as assigned within the classification.

ABOUT YOU

Our Ideal Candidate possesses experience in payroll or retirement benefits administration and has worked with payroll or retirement administration database management systems. We seek an individual with strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and accuracy. Additionally, this person demonstrates a solid commitment to customer service and collaborates effectively with team members.

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE OF

  • County Employees Retirement Law of 1937, Public Employees' Retirement System, and other relevant state or local laws related to retirement.
  • Bookkeeping principles and practices applicable to a wide range of transactions, including computerized accounting and recordkeeping systems.
  • Utilization of reference materials, documents, document control, and data collection.
  • Methods and techniques for researching, proofing, evaluating, gathering, organizing, and arranging data.
  • Business mathematics, English, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
  • General office practices and procedures.
ABILITY TO
  • Interpret, apply, and explain relevant rules, codes, regulations, procedures, policies, laws, and precedents.
  • Comprehend and interpret the provisions of the County Employees' Retirement System, financial records, and the Retirement Act of 1937.
  • Respond professionally, accurately, and promptly to member inquiries; clearly explain irrevocable retirement options to retirees and employees, both individually and in group presentations.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and complete financial and retirement records and files.
  • Perform precise mathematical calculations involving serial calculations from various sources.
  • Operate electronic information equipment and specific systems, entering data accurately.
  • Research, compile, and present financial data.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies in financial and accounting records.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals contacted during the course of work.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive member information.
  • Compose clear, concise reports and work efficiently under deadlines.
The Minimum Qualifications for this position are:
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and abilities listed in the class specification. Typically, completion of two years of college coursework in any field AND two years of experience in accounting, finance, bookkeeping, payroll, accounts payable, and/or budgetary support; OR

Two years of technical experience in processing retirement applications and advising employees regarding retirement benefits.
