Position Overview

Zurich Insurance Company Ltd. is seeking a seasoned Commercial Surety Underwriting Officer to enhance our Commercial Surety division within the Southern Region. While we prefer candidates to be located in major cities such as Houston or Dallas, we are open to considering other prominent locations in the Southern Region, including Austin, San Antonio, or remote options within Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

Role Responsibilities

The Commercial Surety Underwriter plays a pivotal role in the underwriting sector. In this capacity, you will oversee comprehensive account management, spearhead business development initiatives, and conduct thorough analyses of a sophisticated portfolio of Commercial Surety Accounts. The ideal candidate will possess a proactive mindset, a robust financial acumen, including credit evaluation, exceptional communication and presentation abilities, effective time management skills, and a knack for refining negotiation techniques.

Underwriters will employ the Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within designated authority levels on intricate assignments, ensuring exemplary service delivery to our clientele.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Actively pursue renewal and new account prospects.
  • Assess accounts to align with the organization's appetite while balancing viable business opportunities. Negotiate terms and finalize agreements.
  • Cross-sell additional lines of business to enhance product engagement with accounts.
  • Maintain accurate records of broker/client interactions and account status in a timely manner.
  • Utilize underwriting tools effectively to calculate target pricing.
  • Identify and propose solutions for unique challenges faced by business units and clients.
  • Exhibit specialized knowledge and expertise in relevant products and industry standards.
  • Administer and oversee underwriting policies, regulatory compliance, and rating guidelines.
  • Handle assignments at the highest authority limits, demonstrating a high degree of technical complexity and coordination.
QualificationsAVP (6T Level) Basic Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent with 5+ years of experience in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking.
  • OR High School Diploma or Equivalent with 10+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support.
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 3+ years in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking.
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 8+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Understanding of time constraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
  • Experience in a collaborative team environment.
VP (7T Level) Basic Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent with 7+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking.
  • OR High School Diploma or Equivalent with 14+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support.
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 5+ years in Underwriting or Market Facing.
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 12+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Experience and knowledge in Surety and understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks.
  • Insight into broker relationship structures.
  • Ability to analyze complex credit assessments and trends.
  • Curiosity and investigative skills to comprehend business strategies and complex contracts.
  • Capability to articulate financial concepts and formulate fact-based recommendations.
  • Experience in managing and growing a profitable customer portfolio.
  • Negotiation experience with brokers and large organizations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
