Responsibilities

For over 65 years, Arcfield has been a trusted partner to the Navy Strategic Systems Programs (SSP), providing comprehensive research, development, analysis, modeling, simulation, and testing to evaluate weapon system performance under various conditions. Our support encompasses programmatic and systems engineering, technical engineering, scientific analysis, and operational systems support for Navy SSP's Strategic Weapons Systems (SWS). We leverage both commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and proprietary software to deliver critical insights on nuclear weapon effects.


The physicist will engage in scientific analysis and computational modeling to assess intrinsic, normal, hostile, and fratricide radiation environments and their implications for SWS and personnel safety. The ideal candidate will undertake a diverse array of tasks, including:

  • Conducting radiation transport calculations for free-field and internal dose assessments.
  • Performing intrinsic radiation evaluations to ensure personnel safety.
  • Comparing and correlating radiation modeling outcomes with experimental findings.
  • Executing Verification & Validation processes for simulation models and results.
  • Assisting in test planning and execution at radiation, electrical, and mechanical testing facilities.
  • Collaborating with software engineers to integrate physics-based analysis models into maintainable software applications.
  • Supporting the customer in system planning, requirement definition, assessment, and qualification of current and future Navy weapon systems.
  • Creating technical documentation and presentations.
  • Developing comprehensive technical reports detailing assumptions, inputs, outputs, and results.
  • Engaging directly with the customer and traveling for meetings as necessary.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a BS Degree in Physics or Nuclear Engineering with 5-7 years of relevant experience; MS with 3-5 years; or PhD with 0-2 years of experience.
  • Proficiency in experimental design, execution, and modeling.
  • Experience in drafting technical reports or articles.
  • Ability to present findings to technical subject matter experts and government representatives.
  • Must possess and maintain a Top Secret Clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Physics or Nuclear Engineering.
  • Experience in radiation transport (neutron, gamma, x-ray).
  • Capability to develop unique code-to-code interfaces and post-processing routines for model response analyses.
  • Leadership experience in guiding a team of skilled engineers and scientists.
  • Familiarity with industry-leading verification and validation practices, model uncertainty quantification, and statistical analysis of experimental data.
  • Experience with computational tools such as MCNP, Atilla, Matlab, or Python.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to manage detailed tasks.
  • Comfortable working independently or collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of object-oriented design principles.
  • Experience with strategic weapon systems.
