ResponsibilitiesFor over 65 years, Arcfield has provided essential support to Navy Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) through research, development, analysis, modeling, simulation, and testing to evaluate weapon system performance and ensure qualification for various environments. Our support encompasses programmatic and systems engineering, technical engineering, scientific analysis, and operational systems support for Navy SSP's Strategic Weapons Systems (SWS). We utilize both commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and proprietary software to deliver insights on nuclear weapon effects.
The physicist will engage in scientific analysis and computational modeling to assess radiation environments—intrinsic, normal, hostile, and fratricide—and their impacts on SWS and personnel. The ideal candidate will undertake a variety of tasks, including radiation transport calculations, Hardening and Vulnerability (H&V) assessments, Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) evaluations, and the definition and planning of hostile nuclear environments.
This position entails:
- Contributing to team efforts in completing studies on normal, hostile, and fratricide environments for reentry systems.
- Conducting radiation transport calculations for free-field and internal dose levels in Navy systems.
- Performing intrinsic radiation assessments for personnel safety.
- Comparing and correlating radiation modeling outcomes with experimental data.
- Executing Verification & Validation of simulation models and results.
- Assisting in test planning and execution at radiation, electrical, and mechanical test facilities.
- Collaborating with software engineers to integrate physics-based analysis models into maintainable software.
- Supporting the customer in system planning, requirement definition, assessment, and qualification of current and future Navy weapon systems.
- Creating technical documentation and presentations.
- Developing technical reports that detail assumptions, inputs, outputs, and results.
- Delivering presentations and interfacing directly with the customer.
- Traveling for meetings and customer interactions as necessary.
Required Qualifications:
- A minimum of a BS Degree in Physics or Nuclear Engineering with 5-7 years of experience; MS with 3-5 years of experience; or PhD with 0-2 years of experience.
- Experience in experimental design, execution, and modeling.
- Proficiency in writing technical reports or articles.
- Experience presenting findings to technical subject matter experts and government clients.
- Must possess and maintain a Top Secret Clearance.
Desired Qualifications:
- A PhD in Physics or Nuclear Engineering.
- Experience with radiation transport (neutron, gamma, x-ray).
- Ability to develop unique code-to-code interfaces and post-processing routines for model response analyses.
- Capability to lead a team of skilled engineers and scientists.
- Familiarity with verification and validation practices, model uncertainty quantification, and statistical analysis of experimental data.
- Experience with computational tools such as MCNP, Atilla, Matlab, or Python.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated initiative and ability to manage detailed tasks.
- Comfortable working independently or collaboratively.
- Knowledge of object-oriented design.
- Experience with strategic weapon systems.
This is the projected compensation range for this position. Various factors can influence the final salary, including relevant work experience, skills, geographic location, education, and certifications.
