Position Overview: As a research specialist in advanced computing, you will identify, shape, apply, conduct, and lead research initiatives that align with critical needs of the U.S. government.

Qualifications

Research Experience and Publications: You possess a proven track record in conducting research and applying scientific methodologies, maintaining the highest standards of integrity, and have made significant contributions to published research.

Awareness of Emerging Trends: You are knowledgeable about technical challenges and emerging trends in computing and information science, and you recognize opportunities within both industry and government sectors.

In-depth Technical Expertise: You have extensive experience or research background in high-performance computing, distributed and scalable computing, alternative computing architectures, or related domains, along with proficiency in relevant tools, software, and programming languages.

Leadership in Technical Projects: You have led or actively participated in research initiatives and have experience collaborating across research teams while mentoring fellow researchers.

Proposal Development: You have contributed to successful research proposals submitted to funding agencies and have played a role in the resulting projects.

Familiarity with DoD and Intelligence Community: You have knowledge of software systems acquisition practices within the Department of Defense or Intelligence Community.

Key Responsibilities

Conducting Research: You will engage in or lead innovative research in advanced computing, advanced analytics, and applied machine learning.

Developing Solutions: Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, you will transform research findings into prototype operational capabilities for government clients and stakeholders.

Designing and Demonstrating: You will create and develop solutions that deliver essential capabilities to government entities, leveraging cutting-edge research in high-performance computing, edge architectures, data analytics, information architectures, machine learning, artificial intelligence, software architectures, and human-machine interaction.

Testing and Evaluating: You will conduct rapid prototyping to showcase and assess technologies in relevant environments, evaluating systems for performance and security while employing novel testing and analysis techniques.

Collaborating: Actively participating in teams of developers, researchers, designers, and technical leads, you will work closely with researchers and government clients to understand challenges, needs, and potential solutions. You will contribute to enhancing the overall technical capabilities of the Division by mentoring and sharing insights across the SEI.

Programming: You will have the opportunity to work with modern programming languages such as Python and C/C++, as well as hardware design languages including Verilog, VHDL, or other high-level synthesis languages.

Experimenting with Technology: You will explore emerging technologies such as computer vision and cognitive radio, assess novel software stacks, algorithms, and compilers, and investigate the latest advancements in hardware, including FPGAs, CGRAs, TPUs, and neuromorphic processors.

Strategizing: Collaborating with Center leaders and colleagues, you will help formulate and execute an overarching research strategy, influencing the national research agenda regarding future technologies.

Mentoring: You will play a vital role in enhancing the overall technical capabilities of the Center by mentoring others, participating in design sessions, and sharing knowledge across the SEI AI Division team.

Knowledge and Learning: You have a broad technical background and a keen interest in computer science and applied technologies, including human-computer interaction, data analytics, machine learning, advanced computing, and autonomous systems.

Additional Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with eight (8) years of experience; or a Master’s degree in the same fields with five (5) years of experience; or a PhD with two (2) years of experience.

• Willingness to travel to various SEI offices, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings as needed.

• You will undergo a background investigation and must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.
