Position Overview

The Marine Sciences Department is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Marine Sciences Research Vessel Officer at the Avery Point Campus. This is a full-time position requiring 37.5 hours of work per week over a 12-month period, with the potential for extension. The hourly wage is set at $29.66 and is non-negotiable. This role is classified as non-exempt, making it eligible for overtime in accordance with applicable labor laws and institutional policies. The position entails spending approximately 100 days annually at sea, with an average of 4.5 hours of overtime per day while at sea, and 12 hours of overtime on weekends and holidays.

This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Candidates must be prepared to work during emergency situations or significant events affecting campus operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies.
  • Serve as mate and second license on extended trips, which includes navigation and vessel maneuvering under various conditions.
  • Construct and repair specialized equipment as necessary.
  • Operate cranes, winches, davits, and forklifts.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Oversee the inspection, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electronic navigation systems, including GPS and radar.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Extensive knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of engines and related equipment on powered vessels.
  • Familiarity with various types of navigational equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in operating machine shop equipment.
  • Ability to repair and construct equipment as needed.
  • Competence in utilizing computer software.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  1. Four (4) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of gasoline and diesel engines inboard motor vessels operating in offshore and coastal waters.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  1. Experience operating shipboard cranes and winches.
  2. Experience with forklifts.
  3. Experience with Kongsberg Dynamic Positioning Systems.
  4. Experience on research vessels and collaboration with scientists.
  5. Possession of Radar Unlimited endorsement.
  6. Completion of STCW 95 Basic Safety Training.
  7. Previous command experience on vessels of similar size and type.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must possess and retain a minimum of 150 Ton Mate Near Coastal License.
  2. May be required to obtain and maintain STCW Basic certification within three months of hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Candidates must demonstrate adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and sensory acuity to perform the duties required.
  2. A physical examination may be necessary.
  3. Ability to climb ladders and navigate steep steps.
  4. Ability to maneuver in confined spaces, which may require kneeling and crawling.
  5. Participation in a USCG approved random drug testing program is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may face risks of injury from equipment, as well as discomfort from extreme weather, noise, and fumes.
  • The vessel operates continuously and may be away from its home port for extended periods.
  • Expected to share onboard accommodations with fellow crew members.
