POSITION OVERVIEW
The University of Connecticut is in search of a dedicated Chemical Safety and Compliance Manager to oversee the Chemical Health and Safety and Regulated Waste Management divisions across its campuses. This pivotal role will act as the institution's Chemical Hygiene Officer, formulating policies and protocols to safeguard faculty, staff, students, and visitors from the potential health and physical risks associated with hazardous materials and regulated waste. The Manager will ensure adherence to applicable federal, state, and local regulations, as well as established safety standards, while developing and managing the University’s Chemical Hygiene Plan and related safety programs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise the Chemical Safety and Regulated Waste Management teams, including task delegation, performance assessments, and providing mentorship. Create and enforce policies and procedures focused on chemical safety and waste management, integrating training, consultation, risk assessment, and inspection components. Serve as the designated Chemical Hygiene Officer, offering expert guidance on chemical safety issues to University personnel. Design and implement both in-person and online training initiatives for faculty, staff, and students to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Act as the primary contact for federal, state, and local regulatory bodies concerning chemical safety and waste management. Conduct investigations into incidents involving chemicals or waste, collaborating with relevant teams to produce reports and corrective action plans. Communicate updates on policies and procedures to stakeholders, ensuring clarity and consistency across the University. Establish strategic goals and objectives related to chemical health and safety in alignment with University leadership. Collaborate with various departments and external contractors to address safety and design considerations in laboratory settings. Develop guidelines for the management and disposal of controlled substances, coordinating with regulatory agencies as necessary. Consult with researchers and faculty to ensure compliance with safety standards in experimental and research activities. Review protocols for animal research to ensure compliance with safety regulations regarding chemical use. Foster a culture of safety through the establishment of clear policies, comprehensive training, and continuous evaluation of safety programs. Oversee the management of laboratory chemical inventories and regulated waste procurement and disposal processes. Respond to chemical emergencies in laboratories, providing necessary guidance to emergency responders. Conduct inspections of laboratories and equipment to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Collaborate with multiple departments to develop innovative solutions for emerging safety challenges. Prepare status reports on chemical safety initiatives and program activities. Manage the budget for chemical health and safety programs effectively. Perform additional duties as required.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety, chemistry, or a related field, accompanied by seven years of relevant experience, including supervisory experience. OR A Master’s degree in a related field with five years of relevant experience, including supervisory experience. In-depth knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations regarding chemical safety and waste management. Strong communication skills, capable of engaging with a diverse community. Proven experience in developing and implementing safety policies. Demonstrated leadership abilities, with skills in planning and organizing multiple tasks. Ability to build positive relationships with colleagues and external partners.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in health and safety within an academic environment. Current safety and health certifications (e.g., CIH, CSP, CHMM). Experience in regulatory agency collaboration. Proven leadership in working with diverse groups. Experience in delivering training to various audience sizes.
