GENERAL OVERVIEW

This position is under the supervision of the DISTRICT 11 LEADER and involves the professional planning and execution of natural resource management, monitoring, and research tasks related to wildlife and habitat resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and implement management strategies for wildlife and habitats.
  • Provide expert guidance and outreach initiatives to the public, private landowners, and conservation groups.
  • Develop tailored wildlife management plans for landowners as requested.
  • Engage in public education through various media, including press releases and presentations.
  • Prepare detailed reports and articles for both technical and general audiences.
  • Foster community involvement in support of departmental programs.
  • Identify and promote public hunting and non-consumptive use opportunities.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned, adhering to all relevant regulations and procedures.

Salary Information:

The salary for the Natural Resources Specialist I will be determined based on experience and educational qualifications. Current employees may apply for this position at their existing classification level.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Wildlife Science, Wildlife Management, or a related field is preferred, with a minimum of 24 credit hours in relevant subjects.

Experience:

  • NRS I: No prior experience required.
  • NRS II: A minimum of two years of relevant experience.
  • NRS III: At least six years of relevant experience.

Licensing:

Applicants must possess a valid State driver's license. Additionally, candidates must obtain the National Wildfire Coordinating Group's Fire Fighter Type II certification within one year of employment.

Physical Requirements:

Candidates must meet specific physical fitness standards, including the ability to conduct aerial surveys without air sickness and comply with weight restrictions for flight.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with livestock grazing practices, collaboration with rural landowners, and knowledge of big game management is advantageous.

Skills and Abilities:

Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of wildlife species and habitat management.
  • Proficiency in data collection and analysis.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Capability to operate field equipment and perform manual labor.

Working Conditions:

This role requires flexibility in working hours, including potential weekend and holiday shifts. Candidates should be prepared for outdoor work in varying weather conditions and occasional travel.
